Matteson, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,710 at the 2010 census. Matteson is located in the center of Cook County and is bordered by Rockford to the east, Streamwood to the south, Maywood to the north and Oak Park to the west. It is part of Chicago's West Side. Matteson was founded on December 4, 1871 as a small village named Mattesonville after Captain Arthur Matteson who had led an exploratory party into what is now Illinois in 1836. In October 1893, Matteson became one of thirteen municipalities that joined together as "The City of Chicago" pursuant to Mayor John P. Quinn's plan for improved transportation and development within the city limits. This new municipality included all of what are now Matteson Township and parts of Addison Township (now Elmhurst), Ryan Township (now Hinsdale), Woodridge Township (now Winnetka), Bellville Heights Village (now Glenview) and North Shore Village (now Oak Park). At its incorporation date, Matteson had a population of 3235 residents. In 1912 it annexed most of Ryan Township which made it have a population of 10,646 residents when it merged with Ryan Township to form Mattesson-Ryantownship. In 1925–1927 two new wards were created withinMatteson township: Northwest Ward and Southwest Ward both consisting of one hundred fifty homes each instead of their original seventy-five homes per ward limit; these wards were established due largely to White flight from then-rural areas into downtown Chicago following World War II high demand for housing in postwar America brought about by increasing industrialization throughout much Midwest America. The City Council acting upon recommendations from President Franklin D Roosevelt recommended creating additional wards throughout Cook County as part as an anti-communist purge during McCarthyism; however this proposal never materialized because only six municipalities – Danbury CT., Deerfield IL., Greenwich CT., Hoboken NJ., Lawrence KS., Nassau NY – removed themselves from McCarthyism hysteria following revelations that their mayors had winked at Communists while they served in office. On January 1st 2006 Mayor Tom Barrett announced that he would not seek re-election after more than twenty years on the jobMayorTomBarrett. This land would become Matteson Township and be named after George Higgs himself. In 1901, Jens Jensen bought 1,000 acres (3 km2) around what is today downtown Matteson from Higgs for $20 per acre ($400 per hectare). On July 5th 1920 Alfred Nobel donated his share of dynamite to create an explosives plant at University Park in Evanston to produce munitions during World War I which eventually led to prohibition in America In 1947-48 when migration rates were high due to war service or farm occupation throughout northern Illinois there were large numbers of people living near by with few prospects for housing or employment so many people "camped" on property belonging to local businesses or families who cooked their meals over open fires all winter long without running water or heat either some lived outdoors under canvas tents while others ran an engine powered sawmill turning logs until it broke down wooded areas into building lots they went door-to-door selling Lots started out small with 4x4s driving through town stopping at each home asking if anyone wanted a lot then continued inland towards Plainfield where they built homes started building larger lots then moved back onto their individual homes when things got better so on and so forth
