In 1905 – 1906, City Council members Allan Semon (left) and Julius Rosenwald donated land south of present day State Road A1A for what would become Northwestern University’s Evanston campus – one ofAmerica’s earliest collegiate campuses! The university occupies more than 4 acres now located within walking distance of downtown Matteson! Matteson has been occupied continuously by humans since before any written records were found! Paleo-Indians may have hunted game and gathered shellfish near this location; however no evidence exists to suggest human occupation dating back as far as 10 millennia ago! In fact archaeologists believe that early man moved into this area from parts unknown about 12 thousand years ago! Today many mills remain active with products ranges including textiles, autos and plastics being produced here! Today Northwestern University continues to serve as one of Midwest’s top educational institutions while major businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., McDonald’s Corporation (now KFC), Ford Motor Company (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), DuPont de Nemours & Co., General Electric Company (now Comcast) are all headquartered in Matteson!.
