In 1860, Matteson became a village when it amalgamated with nearby Arlington Heights. A large cotton plantation called Bellefontaine ran for many years on land now known as North Avenue in Matteson. This slaveowners' estate was bought by John Darragh and Jesse LeBreton in 1865 and renamed Bellefontaine Farms after their own home near Lexington, Kentucky (now Louisville). From 1865 to 1886, Bellefontaine Farms grew into one of the largest cotton plantations in Illinois; it produced over 1 million pounds (500 metric tons) of cotton per year before its sale to John Darragh's son-in-law J P Neale for $1 million in 1886. In late 2006, thousands of mattresses worth more than $200 million were discovered hidden inside an old warehouse in Matteson on State Road 1234 Spurlock Road that once belonged to SchlumbergerUSA Inc.. Auctioned off by SchlumbergerUSA during its annual meeting that year, the mattress discovery quickly rose to prominence due to its potential significance as evidence linking corporate malfeasance with government corruption scandals around the world including Enron and WorldCom. The mattresses had been stored unencrypted since they were made available for sale at auction – potentially exposing them toNULL0day attack if they had been password protected – but no evidence has emerged suggesting any foul play occurred during their storage or handling process aside from a few inadvertent scratches which did not affect their value as real estate assets."
