In 1849, Drury Hennepin constructed an oil refinery on the south side of town to process crude oil brought overland from Canada by wagon train builders working for Hennepin Transportation Company When railroads were built through central Illinois during the late 19th century, people began to move into Matteson to work on them. By 1900, there were over 10 businesses operating in what is now downtown Matteson; today there are just three businesses left that survive primarily as small retailers or antique stores During World War II, steel mills closed across Northwestern Illinois due to wartime production restrictions; however,Matterson's major employer (the Joplin Steel Works) continued operations until 1957 despite being out of business for forty years After World War II ended, many families moved back into Midwest cities such as Cleveland or Detroit due to postwar job opportunities; however, few people replaced steelworkers who had retired In 1952–1953 Mayor Michael Sauer spearheaded efforts to renovate downtown including making it a more walkable district with new streetscape features and installation of streetlights In 1959 Mayor Sauer founded Friends of Downtown Matteson Inc., which has served as both promotor and organizer for various community events throughout its history including Taste of Mattesons (a food festival held annually at Nathan Phillips Square), Art Walk/Sunday Market (an annual art fair held outdoors adjacent to Main Library), Fourth Street Alive! series annually showcasing local talent during early summer months culminating with a week-long concert series at Ulysses S Green Amphitheater featuring some of Northwestern Illinois' top artists

This gave shooters an additional place where they could put their hands while holding their weapon - making it much more difficult for someone else to grabholdof your firearm without being able to shoot it!

Matteson was founded in 1847 by Nicholas Matteson and John H. Gage. The town was named for General George Matteson, who had served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1868, Matteson became the first city in Illinois to be declared an electric city.
