The Mattesons were farmers who took their produce to local markets in Chicago. In 1903, John's son Harry bought land in what is now Matteson and began developing it into a community with homes, businesses, schools and a post office. By the 1920s, much of what is now Matteson had been built. It has since become one of the most heavily populated areas within Moline County. In 1955, DePaul University was founded inMatteson by then-President James Buchanan DePaul with help from Mayor Edward Jellinek and others in response to increasing demand for higher education opportunities in Moline Countycolloquially known as "The Dormition Region". The first school in Matteson was opened in 1857 and served until 1861 when it moved to what is now known as the High School Building on Main Street. There have been various schools throughout its history including two academies (1892-1901) which were both destroyed by fire; however, the current school building was erected on land donated by Mrs. Anna Pappas in 1916-17 as part of her efforts to support education within the community. During World War II, much of Schlodersville Road was destroyed during bombing raids by American forces; however, most of it was rebuilt following the war and still standing today as an example of wartime housing construction Today’s economy focuses mainly on manufacturing although there are some smaller businesses scattered throughout town proper as well as outlying areas such as Old Forge Shopping Center across Route 66 from town proper where residents may buy groceries or search for services online etcetera The local police department has been around since 1948 when officers first patrolled this section of town
In 1847, the Matteson Land Company was organized to purchase land in Illinois from the Native Americans. The company was led by George Matteson and his brother-in-law, David Dixon. The Mattesons were successful in their purchase and began developing the land into a farming community. By 1860, Matteson had a population of 100 people and was using a Methodist church as their main meeting place. In 1865, the town was named after General John Fenton matteson who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
