Matteson, Illinois is a town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,652 at the 2010 census. The Matteson community was platted in 1847 by John Matteson and his family from Ashtabula Township in Bartow County. It was named for the family's farmstead called "Matson's Landing." In 1852, the village of Matteson was organized as a post office with James Treadway as its first mail carrier. A store and tavern were built there in 1853. By 1860, the population of Matteson had reached 200 people. In 1871, the first railroad arrived in Matteson with a track to Killianstown on the White River; it connected with other railroads near Chicago. The death of James Treadway led to a decline in business until 1895 when he bequeathed $10,000 to build an academy and library for the townspeople. In 1896-97, local farmers formed a cooperative grain Elevator Association which raised wheat and corn on their own lands for shipment to Chicago markets. In 1899-1900 construction began on what is now known as First National Bank of Matteson (now part of JBS Financial). That same year saw completion of what is now Ulysses S Grant High School; it opened in 1901 after several years of construction budgeted at $5,000/year but topped out at $25,000/year due to cost overruns caused by increased population growth and development around town center. The economy improved following World War I when production increased from munitions plants located near Milwaukee into agriculture; this included meatpacking plant expansion into Matteson beginning in 1928 followed by poultry feed mills beginning around that time also reaching present day residents through distribution channels including grocery stores until 1966 when all those activities closed down leaving mattessons reliance largely upon independent retailers produce only animal feeds today
