Matteson, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of the state of Illinois. It lies about 8 miles east of Carbondale, 9 miles northeast of Peoria and 11 miles west of Moline. The population was 7,696 at the 2000 census. Matteson is part of the Quad-Cities Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by a group of farmers who had arrived from Decatur County, Indiana. In 1881, Matteson became an incorporated village with a population of 574 people. The Village Board changed its name to Matteson in 1902 after founder James A. Matteson donated land for that purpose. In 1925, Matteson became a city and has remained so ever since. The history and culture of Matteson are significant contributions to the Quad-Cities Combined Statistical Area as a whole. Much important progress was made during early years when it was known as "the little village." For instance, on July 4th championship football games were played here between Northwestern University (now Northwestern State University) and Chicago College (now DePaul University). The Matteson area was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans in 1690. The area became a part of the United States of America in 1783. In 1815, the Matteson family founded the town of Matteson on landutschk that they had acquired from the Weikart family. The town was named after John Matteson, who donated land to the town.
