Matteson, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,527 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Chicago by population and the second-largest by area. Matteson is located on the southern edge of Chicago and borders the municipality of Skokie to the north and northwest, Lemont to the east, Oak Lawn to the south and west, and Rosedale to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Matteson were French traders in 1763. A post office was established in 1829 with a mailing address of "Mtowski". At that time Matteson consisted of three small villages: North Matteson (now part of Thornton), East Matteson (now part of Cicero), and South Matteson (now part of Morton Grove). In 1868–69 John Pestalozzi visited Matteson while on his way from Geneva to Chicago; he recommended that settlers be brought here due to its rich soil, gentle climate, good water supply, streetcar service available near by,[1] and proximity to other settlements such as Cicero[2] and Elmhurst. In 1870–71 Isaac Noyes made an unsuccessful attempt to found an agricultural colony at what is now known as Niles Valley.[3] In 1872 when there were only about seventy people living in Matteson,[4] two men from Canada named John Auld founded a country store called Grosse Pointe Prairie on Wabash Avenue between 95th Street and Grand Boulevard. From this store grew Grosse Pointe Prairie Township which became one of eight townships within Cook County on November 1, 1902.[5][6][7] On October 25, 1907ona post office opened with mail addressed "Mtropolis".[8][9][10] On July 10 1915 a fire destroyed much of downtown mattison after being started by someone trying open a door left unlocked during morning rush hour; it was quickly extinguished without any injuries but embarrassed many who had come for business purposes onlyto find their stores gone
