In 1877, George Dennett organized a group of farmers to purchase 640 acres (253 hectares) of land north of Matteson for agricultural development purposes only; this parcel would later become known as Union Park . This institution would be one of Matteson's most important landmarks during its history and remain so until it closed its doors in 1969 after years of neglect. In 1902-1903 two new schools were built: Holy Cross School (now Our Lady Of Lourdes School) and Estero High School . A woman by the name of Mrs Hill opened her own grocery store on State Street just east of Main Street in 1922 which soon grew into a successful business with over 100 employeeskelves . With growth came advancements such as better transportation options available through roads like I-290 and more people coming to live within walking distance; all while maintaining informal settlements that surrounded both schools until they closed down due to lack funding or violence from students or parents alike
