Matteson is a small town in Illinois, located about 20 miles northwest of Chicago. The population was 1,392 at the 2010 census. Matteson is named after Captain John Matteson and his family who settled in the area in 1835. A post office called Matteson was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settlers to Matteson were Major John W. Godfrey and his party who arrived on July 10, 1835. They built a cabin on the shore of the Gage River which they named "Mathers." Other early settlers include Moses Hanks (a blacksmith), James Purdy (a doctor and Methodist preacher), Levi Coffin (a carpenter), David Nixon (an Ohio farmer) and Isaac Seymour (an attorney). A school was organized for children at Matteson's location on October 3, 1840 by Rev. Denton Ladd with assistance from Reverend Samuel Morse. The first teacher was Mrs. Gould who taught reading, writing, arithmetic and geometry to six students starting on December 15th of that year. In 1844 a second school building was erected by George Sibley with assistance from Reverend Morse and Mrs. Gould; this school taught algebra, trigonometry and other mathematics subjects as well as cooking, housekeeping skills and elementary French language instruction to district children while their parents worked east across the river at Batavia or Tomahawk Landing during market season.. At the same time an addition to the original two-story log schoolhouse also served as a home for teachers’ families when needed during term breaks or long absences from work.. In 1865 another two-story log School House replaced MrsSibley’s previous structure; this building housed grades K-5th grades along with adult education classes offered by MrGould during summer months only.. From 1870 through 1906 there were thirteen schools operated within theMatteson School District – three primary schools (Kindergarten throughGrade 5th), four middle schools (6th through 8th grade) three high schools (9th through 12th grade) one special needs/vocational/trade high school for African Americans opened in 1978 & closed 2009 & one continuation high school open since 2007 which serves students in Prekindergarten thru Eighth Grade providing access to many applied arts programs including music & dance!

Matteson was founded in 1857 by German immigrants, the Matteson Brothers. The town became a major center of American agriculture and served as a major transportation hub for the region. It was also home to the first electric streetlights in Illinois. In 1925, Matteson was renamed North Chicago after it merged with neighboring town North Side.
