Matteson, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on both sides of the Chicago River. The Matteson area has been inhabited by Native Americans for many years. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne and his army fought an engagement at Matteson Field where General Wayne's force was routed and 1st Lieutenant John Jacob Astor acquired title to land in what is now Matteson Township. A post office called Matteson was established in 1819, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. The name "Matteson" probably comes from Dutch word "matten", meaning "a piece of wood". A sawmill built near the current site of Matteson High School began operation in 1871; it became one of the largest employers in the community. In 1902, railroad magnate Andrew Carnegie donated land to build a rail line between Joliet and New York City. The first train reached Matteson on October 13, 1902. At that time, only 7 people lived in Matteson; today its population exceeds 15,000 residents including 4200 students at three high schools: Matthew (formerly South Weingarten), Kane (formerly North Chicago), and Emmaus (now Addison). Masonic Lodge #5 had been organized as a fraternal society in 1865 under charter from Grand Lodge No. 33 of Pennsylvania when there were few Lodges west of the Alleghenies outside Philadelphia proper; however membership rapidly grew due to influxes from Northwestern Indiana whence many immigrants came during this period seeking economic opportunity while they awaited their assembled families' arrival America's Great Awakening brought with it new religious denominations led by evangelical Protestants such as Methodists who soon founded their own lodges across Cook County including Masonic Lodge No 5 which continued growth into the early 20th century attracted numerous memberships among professionals such as bankers & engineers men farmers mechanics powerboats captains shipbuilders managers clerks women A fire destroyed part of building used for offices about 1915 damaging library but no one was injured
