Matteson is a city in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 114 at the 2010 census. Matteson is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Matteson were farmers and their families who arrived in1854 from New England. A post office called Matteson was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store in Matteson was built by John Catton, and operated for two years. In 1875, John Daugherty opened a grocery store on the corner of Elm and Cass streets. Daugherty became owner of the business when it merged with his brother-in-law's store, the American Hotel & Store on Dearborn Street to form the Daugherty Store Company. The first department store in Matteson opened on State Street adjacent to the current intersection of State and Elm Streets in 1883 by George Hirschfeld as Hirschfeld's Department Store. On October 20, 1888, Pabst Brewing Company established its brewery here with a plant that still stands today at 313 N Huron St (now known as Pabst Blue Ribbon). In 1916, J P Morgan invested $1 million into what would become Macklinore Oil Corporation which would later become International Harvester Incorporated (IHC). IHC built an oil refinery here on Canonsburg Road thenleased to Cadillac Motors Corporation where it remains today as Cadillac Rancho High School. In 1965 IHC sold its interest in Cadillac Rancho High School to Southeastern Illinois Teachers Union Local 955 for $5 million making Matteson one of only a handful of U.S.-based businesses to be sold by IHC outside its original headquarters location(s). This event signaled not only change for Matteson but also dramatic improvements across much of southern Illinois due to federal investment during World War II led by President Franklin D Roosevelt’s America First Committee seeking “ production agriculture that will feed our people domestically rather than exporting food products at high prices around the world” – investments such as these helped laythe groundwork for modern dayMattesonsand industries such as oil production through Midwestern towns such as Danvilleand CarbondaleTodayover 100 companies callMattesonhome including many that are major employers within downtown

Matteson is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Matteson is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and was one of the original towns in Cook County. It is named for George Matteson, an early settler. The first Europeans to visit Matteson were French traders from Quebec in 1673. In 1763, the British claimed land along the Upper Michigan River as part of their claim to North America. The British built Fort Dearborn on this site in 1765 and began trading with Native Americans here. In 1814, Matthias DePreez purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land southeast of Matteson from John Kinzie for $600. This became known as DePreez Township after him and his brother-in-law Amos Drake founded what is now Drake Farmsstead Colony there in 1815; it was also called Prairie du Chien (“place where the water comes out high”). On December 15, 1847, General David Dixon ordered all Native American males between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one living within two miles (3 km) of any white person be driven off their lands without food or shelter for six weeks or until they could leave voluntarily by horse or wagon; this order became known as "The 10 Commandments". Most Natives resisted deportation but some did flee into Indian Territory south of Lake Michigan because they would have been caught between white settlers and their Indian enemies if they had stayed behind. As a result of this expulsion campaign about 1/4 million Native Americans left central Minnesota for Oklahoma over that period . In 1849–1850 when anti-native violence erupted across America due to pressure from European investors who wanted these areas opened up for settlement – especially Kansas – General James Kasky sent cavalry units into Matteson to disperse native families while supplies lasted; almost all men over age 20 were forced onto trains headed westward that winter under threat of death if they didn't leave immediately. About 100 people died during this episode which remain oneofthe largest massacres ever committed by American Indians against whites outside California . "Matteson: A Growth Town" tells the story how Matteson has grown since its incorporation into Cook County in 1920 by developer Jocko Willitsen."This small community on Chicago's Northwest Side grew rapidly during World War II thanks to demand from service members stationed there at Kane County Airport."
