Matteson, Illinois is a small town in central Illinois. It is the seat of Cook County and lies on the border of Will County and McLean County. The population was 20,714 at the 2010 census. Matteson was founded in 1847. Matteson is a manufacturing center for corn, soybeans, and other agricultural products. The first settlers in Matteson were Eastern European Jews who came to work on the new railroad. They built homes near what is now Main Street and First Avenue. In 1851, German farmers moved into Matteson from nearby Lemont Township and started raising crops there. By 1865, most of the Eastern European Jews had left for America but some remained behind to join their families in Matteson. The first store opened in Matteson in 1867 by Nathan Wexler and his brother-in-law Jacob Epstein as part of a general store chain that grew throughout central Illinois. In 1870, Hermann Kapp erected a large stone structure known as Kapp's Store which served as the nucleus around which community life developed over time. A post office was established at this location in 1871; it became operational two years later under the name of "Mattison." With its growing commerce base came an increased demand for space; by 1886, Kapp's Store had grown to encompass nearly all of what is now Main Street between First and Second Avenues (now Second Street). At this point, many early residents—including some who had arrived earlier from Hungary—became naturalized United States citizens through marriage or adoption ceremonies conducted at Kapp's Store In 1898–99 when local farm prices went up due to abundant world supplies of corn following World War I shortages worldwide, farmers began planting larger maize varieties such as red manuda (a typeof wheat) instead of smaller white types like Iowa long grain;; these changes led to increased yields/costs for traditional corn farmers while sparing high-yielding hybrid varieties developed for world markets Thanks to advances made during World War II with discovery of new oil resources along Interstate 90 just east of Matteson village limits, economic development slowly picked up again starting around 1945 until reaching full stride by 1970 when steel production peaked This growth spurt continued until 2000 when suburbanization/commercialization rapidly took hold leading to loss or diminution

Matteson is a town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,965 at the 2010 census. Matteson was first settled in 1836 by John Matteson and his wife Anna. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1851. The community of Matteson had its start when John Matteson built a cabin on the site of what is now the town square in 1836. In 1857, he erected a log courthouse which still stands today. In 1860, the community became an agricultural village with seventy-six residents. By 1870, however, it had grown to 1,500 people and began to become more industrialized; this growth halted during World War II when many of the local mills closed due to wartime shortages of lumber and other materials. After the war ended, much of the industrial plant closed but some continued operation until they were bought out by General Electric in 1957; since then Matteson has been largely an agricultural town with few major businesses active outside of agriculture or tourism
In 1834, Levi Matteson, a Quaker settler in the area now known as Matteson, Illinois, organized a land claim with other settlers. The group named their settlement "Matteson Township", after Matteson's home town of Bedford, England. In 1836, the township was established with a population of 10 residents. By 1840, the township had an estimated population of 25 people. The first school in Matteson Township was built in 1838. It was used for grade school and then for local militia training until it was destroyed by fire in 1846. A second school was built in 1850 and served as the township's high school from 1852 to 1862. In 1865, the high school became part of the Chicago Normal School system and is now located at Western University in Chicago. In 1861-1865, Matteson Township hosted two major engagements during the American Civil War: The Battle of Springfield (March 9th) and The Battle of White Sands (April 14th). Both battles were fought near present day Decatur Heights on County Road 627 east of town. The battle resulted in Union losses while Confederate losses amounted to over 50 dead and over 130 wounded soldiers including General Ulysses S Grant himself
