The Model-1853 rifle was very successful and helped usher in the age of airguns as a recreational firearm. In 1865, Henry repeating rifles were introduced into service with the Union army. These rifles featured multiple barrels that could fire shells at once. Airguns began to become popular among civilians during World War I because of their low cost and easy use. By 1919, there were over 10 million airgun owners in the United States alone! During World War II, many people turned to airguns for shooting targets indoors or outdoors due to concerns about gas warfare and nuclear war. After World War II ended, airguns continued to be popular due to their affordability and ease of use. Matteson is an agricultural town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,541 at the 2010 census. Matteson was laid out in 1837 by James A. Matteson and his wife Elizabeth Conant. It became a city on July 1, 1907. The Matteson-Hennepin Copper Company was organized on October 25, 1886 by two partners of the company: J.P. Butler and George Hennepin. The copper mine was located in what is now Matteson proper, but part of the town including its downtown were built on the site of what is now Hennepin Mall (now based in Minneapolis). As early as 1837, James A. Matteson had envisioned making Matteson a commercial center due to its location at the junction of several important routes and its centrality within Cook County for trade with other parts of the state and country. On November 10, 1837, he submitted a plat to the county for approval of his planned community which would include twelve blocks square with one block having two stories high – all bounded north by Randolph Street and east by Dearborn Avenue; south by Carpenter Road; west by Elmhurst Avenue; and northwest by Cass Avenue (later called Prospect Park Avenue). This development would have been oriented along Randolph Street which paralleled Dearborn Avenue between First Street (northwest corner) and Second Street (southwest corner), bisected Carpenter Road between Third Street (east side) and Fourth Street (west side), intersected Elmhurst avenue at Fifth street near Rosslyn Catholic Church, crossed Cass avenue near Highland Park Golf Course (northwest corner),and terminated at Prospect Park Ave., running parallel to Randolph street from first to last block." matteson coppers map
Matteson was founded in 1836 by John Matteson and his brother, James. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s due to its location on the Chicago River, which made it a convenient transportation hub for goods and passengers. In 1851, Matteson was incorporated as a city. By 1860, Matteson had over 1,000 residents and was considered one of the leading towns in Illinois. In 1865, Matteson became the capital of Illinois. The city experienced significant growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century thanks to its strategic location on the Mississippi River and its access to education and industry. In 1916, Mattison was renamed Chicago after Mayor John Hynes pushed for the change because of concerns about how name recognition would affect business values in Northern Illinois.
