Markham, Illinois is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,594 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Major General James Markham who fought in the American Civil War and was later brevetted brigadier general. The post office has been in operation since 1852. The first settler in what is now Markham was John Stephenson, who arrived on horseback from Maryland in 1836. By 1840 there were six families living here total. In 1854 Luther Price built the first frame house in what is now Markham, which he named "Price's Landing". In 1860 Charles WOODS moved to present-day Markham from Westchester County, New York and founded the first school there - called Woodstock Schoolhouse (now part of Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church). In 1870 Augustus JONES established a grist mill here which became known as Jones Millinery & Thread Mills. Mrs. Jane KINNEY opened her own store on Main Street in 1907 and it still stands today, serving as the only remaining brick building in town. In 1945 Harry HARVEY set up a gas station near his home for sales of gasoline to cars driving along State Road 2 (now US Highway 27) north of town limits; this was one of the few businesses open during World War II that thrived without prior military or industrial support. Harold Harvey died suddenly four years later at age 74 after a long battle with leukemia; his widow continued operations until her death three years later at age 89%. Markham welcomed its first black occupant when Reva WHITE came to live with her family here circa 1966; she had grown up in nearby Englewood Cliffs, NJ and had worked as an maid before coming to Illinois to live with her niece Linda WHITEHILLS and uncle Alfred WHITEHILLS once their daughter MARGARET married John DAVIS III.. White soon retired from active duty as an Tektronix technician/operator stationed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center outside Huntsville AL where she remained until her retirement five years ago; she remains functionally blind but still uses an cane because of residual effects of radiation exposure while working on space Shuttle missions.. In 1814, the first white settlers arrived in what is now Markham, Illinois. The area was part of the Shawnee Nation and was home to a number of their villages. In 1827, the U.S. government moved Indian tribes from central Missouri to Oklahoma and set up a reservation in present-day Markham. The tribe's leader, Tecumseh, opposed this move and led an uprising that ended in his death. After Tecumseh's death, many members of his tribe migrated westward into Kansas Territory. In 1851, the Kansas Territory was divided into two parts: one containing Markham and the other including Wichita Falls. The western half of Wichita Falls became part of Texas while the eastern half became part of Illinois.
