Weigel founded The Weigel Bros., ammo dealers and Targets in Markham Township (now part of Elmhurst). They operated their store for over fifty years until their passing in 1984. From there, it was taken over by Wm & Marge Koppel who ran it until 1998 when they sold it to Don Freeman of Freeman Gun Shop fame which continues to operate today as Don’s Gun Shop Ltd.. One of the earliestTarget Holders in Markham Township was Fenton Bros., who opened their shop on Elmhurst Avenue in 1922. Over time, other businesses moved into this location including Pabst Cigars, Joplin’ Joe’s Pizza, Radio Shack and more! The village of Markham was organized on November 14, 1839 by the merger of two villages - Galesburg and Westmont. On January 1, 1907, it became a city and had a population of 3,574. On December 11, 1949 it merged with neighboring Villa Park to form the current city of Markham. According to local legend, on July 4th each year during summertime an old woman known as "Mammy" will wander around the village collecting eggs from people's chickens while they are out getting water or firewood. She then feeds them to her pet dog while they cook dinner over an open fire pit she sets up near her home. This tradition started when MrsFord's daughter girl helped gather eggs for Mama that day and mommy got so excited she forgot all about it!
