The name "Markham" probably derived from a Creek Indian word meaning “broad mouth” or “mouth of a creek.” In 1831, Wm. Stephenson built a large frame house at what is now Park Avenue and State Street, which became known as the Stephenson House Historic Site. The railroad arrived in 1866 and soon after, businesses began to develop around the tracks. By 1870, over one hundred businesses were operating along Park Avenue including several hotels and restaurant chains such as Cafe Moulin Rouge and Kentucky Fried Chicken. This period marked an important growth for Markham with waves of new immigrants coming to work hard on local farms while also bringing their cultural values with them. In 1902, Mayor George Prentice declared summer vacation weeklong in order to promote tourism in downtown Markham which quickly attracted people from all over Chicago who would visit during that time period for picnics, dances,/theatre events etcetera. One such event was held at City Hall which featured live music by Fenton Willinghams Orchestra followed by a parade through town followed by picnic lunch at City Hall Lawn near Lake Michigan just south of current day First Presbyterian Church site where present day City Hall stands
