Markham is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,786 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The name of the town comes from the Ottawa River and its original location on this river's left bank. The first settlers in what is now Markham were French Canadian immigrants who founded the village of La Salle in 1791. A post office was established here in 1836, and by 1857 it had become a small town with a population of just over 500. However, growth continued to slow until World War II when business interests began to boom thanks to munitions manufacturing plants located nearby. The war also led to an increase in population; by 1950 Markham had reached its peak with 22,000 residents. However, growth again slowed as jobs moved away and numerous residences were built along the river for workers commuting into downtown Chicago or other large cities. Today, however, there are still many businesses and housing developments within walking distance of each other making life much easier for those living hereabouts - something that has been especially evident during recent economic downturns when job opportunities have dried up but prices for houses have not increased significantly despite persistent low interest rates throughout most of North America. When one reflects upon all that has been happening here since 1800 – markdowns on books at local stores dating back to 1830 (the property value per acre having plummeted because no rails passed through), wagons filled with goods arriving daily downriver at point where now Hennepin Street meets the river – one can appreciate how special this place truly is! Markham is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The community was named for John Markham, who donated the land for its establishment. The first settler in the area was James Hargrave, who arrived in 1837. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1840, other settlers had moved to the area and began growing maize and wheat crops. A post office called Markham was established in 1846, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1871, a railway line reached Markham from Joliet through nearby West Chicago to Peoria; this made it an important stop on the railroad network. The businesses that developed around the station include grocery stores and several banks. In 1865–1866, Major General Ulysses S Grant visited Markham while he campaigned for president; during his stay he stopped at the local schoolhouse where he ate dinner with students and staff members before traveling onward to campaign elsewhere. The population of Markham increased rapidly after World War II due to immigration from Europe and advances in technology. In 1951, when Interstate 55 was completed east of town alongpresent-day Illinois Route 181 (US 20), most of the growth slowed down as people switched to driving instead of walking or biking to work downtown or farther away on main streets such as Market Street or State Street; however some new businesses did continue to open up near I-55 despite this changeover trend. In 1990s there were efforts by residents group "Markham 2030" which unsuccessfully lobbied for villagehood status within McLean County but succeeded in gaining cityhood status just north of town along present day US 20/181). After years of discussion between village board members and city officials over zoning changes that would have allowed more retail development within their boundaries including housing developments outside of existing commercial areas within township limits (a condition precedent for becoming city-owned),markHAM's first mayor Richfield died suddenly without having had a chance to run for re-election causing many villagers not onlyto lose faith but also some merchants who turned against him because they thought he would squander their money if elected rather than invest it back into their business enterprises
