Markham is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Markham was organized on December 1, 1871 from parts of the former town of Wilmette and township of Herkimer. The first post office in Markham was established on October 15, 1872. According to the 2010 census, there were 3,527 people in Markham village—a decrease of 2% from 3,528 at the 2000 census. The racial makeup of Markham village was 98% white (92% European American), 0% black or African American, and 2% Native American or Alaskan Native; 1% Asian; and 0% other races. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1%. In 2000, reported religions included no religious affiliation reported by respondents (0%). In 1830 John Stephenson built a log cabin near present day Winnetka on what would become Stephenson Road (). When he died in 1840 his son Tryon inherited his land which extended into what is now Cook County including much of what is now Markham Township ().Tryon named his new holdings "Markham", after his father's home town in England (). Tryon died without issue in 1851 so his land passed to John Stevenson's grandson James Stevenson who sold it to Abram Sennett for $2 per acre () On July 20th 1865 Abraham Sennett donated two acres (4 hectares) to the Presbyterian Church near where Wabash Avenue meets Cicero Street (), naming it "Sennett Park" because he had been its pastor during its early years.) After Reverend James Aitken became pastor here on May 5th 1889 (), this property became known as "Church Park" () . From 1890 until 1925 this lot lay within what is now Midway Boulevard between State Streets and Cicero Street eastward." Soil test results dated January 17th 1924 found high levels of arsenic and lead content (−66 ppmv) within five feet (.15 m)of this church lot boundary." This event led to Rev. John Fenton establishing an organization called "The Public Health Association for South Side Chicago" which purchased Church Park from Mr. Sennett for $3 per acre (). Reverend Fenton then sold it back to Abram Sennett for $2 per acre (). In 1930 these lots were annexed bymarkhamvillage along withall other Lots donated by Reverend James Aitken during prohibition days." During World War II all plots north and east side between Cicero street & midway boulevard were taken up by housing projects due largely to available building space off-the-map proximate Chicagoland markets." markHAMveHousing

Markham was founded in 1837 by John and Catharine Markham. The townspeople were farmers who grew corn, wheat, beans, and other crops. In 1840, the Markhams built a log cabin on the banks of the Danube River. They began to trade goods with surrounding villages and towns. By 1850, the town had a population of about 50 people. In 1861, the first Methodist Church was built in Markham. The town became an agricultural center and saw some growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s. However, World War I hit Markham hard; many residents lost their jobs and families were affected. In 1919, Mayor Harry Hays proposed that the village be merged with neighboring townships to form a new city proper. However, this proposal was defeated 4-1 by a committee led by Mayor Hays himself. After World War II ended, much of the economic activity in Markham slowed down due to low birth rates among certain groups in society (such as blue collar workers). In recent years, however, business has picked up again as more people move into the area for work or pleasure reasons.
