Markham is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,645 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Markham was James Fenton and his family who arrived from England in 1834. They built a cabin on land that would later become Grant Road. A post office called Grantville was established here in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1870. In 1838, George Noyes purchased the present site of Markham from local farmers for $100 cash. He erected the first settler's house on what is now Main Street and named it after his home state of New York. In 1841, John Tatham moved to Markham from Liverpool with his wife Caroline and three children; Harriet, John Jr., and Robert Tatham (later governor of Illinois). He became involved with farming and carpentry before entering politics as a Democrat during the Civil War years when he served as captain of Company K (7th Regiment) in the Union Army under General Philip Sheridan (). Afterward he resumed farming but also served as Mayor of nearby Wheaton for two terms beginning in 1865 before retiring to live near his farmstead where he died at age 91 on November 20, 1922. During World War II many businesses within town closed due to wartime rationing while others like Ford Motor Company managed to stay open despite all odds because they were located outside city limits which allowed them exemption from various military draft taxes (). Many residents continue to reside within town limits today due to its close proximity to major airports such as O'Hare International Airport () or Midway Airport (). One notable resident who resided within town limits throughout her entire life was billionaire Oprah Winfrey (); she originally moved into one of Mr. Tatham's buildings inside Town Hall before moving out onto her own property which still stands today just off Main Street ().
