Markham is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,865 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to Chicago's largest shopping mall. With its large downtown area, Markham has become a center for business and cultural activity in the citywide metropolitan area. The city was founded on December 12, 1847 by David Mills as a depot for wagonloads of corn that were being shipped from Illinois to Michigan. The town name was changed to Markham in 1865 after General John Buel's division of the Union army occupied the town during the American Civil War. In 1868, local farmers formed a village called Clearwater Township within Markham limits; this village dissolved in 1870 when it merged with neighboring Sheffield Township. In 1871, Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld granted land east of what is now Lake Shore Drive to David Mills and others in exchange for money they had lent him while he served as state treasurer under Abraham Lincoln. This grant created what is now Northwestern Park District; it also included much of today's downtown area including most of the former milltown known as "Millsville". In 1888, local dairy farmer James Fenton donated land north of where present-day Fullerton Avenue intersects Lake Street (now Wacker Drive) to form Fenton Park District; this district includes much of modern-day Markham east of Fullerton Avenue and west of Wacker Drive along Ernie Martin Boulevard). In 1893–1894, Judge Augustus Kelley donated part of his estate northwest from Fullerton Avenue into what is now North Western High SchoolDistrict; this school district includes much today's northwest side including much current-day Southwestern Middle School and all but one block south along Erie Street between Griggs Road and Elmhurst Road). As development increased around Markham over time, businesses opened up throughout central Illinois: One such business opening up soon after was Edward Lasky & Brothers hardware store on State Street which became known as "the Hardware Store That Stayed Open", serving customers until 1956 when it closed due to competition from Sears Roebuck & Co.'s new store near Northwest Side Airport (now Midway Airport). Other early businesses include Mr. Jukes' bakery on Addison Streets which operated until 1896 when it burned down due to fire insurance fraud by Mayor George Sheppard; bicycle shop Harry Denny started selling bicycles at Main Street stop next door in 1902; Julius Rosenwald set up an ice cream parlor on Clinton street near North Western High School in 1906 before moving across IL Route 66 into Evanston later that year; grocery store Harry Smith first opened on Elmhurst Road just north of present day fullerton avenue southbound about 1912 or 1913 before expanding into nearby buildings on Fullerton Avenue between griggs road and ernie martin Boulevard); several small medical clinics were established over time including Driscoll & Associates Physical Therapy clinic opened in 1928 services patients through 1976 while Wellman Clinic operated from 1933 until its closure circa 1990 also providing physical therapy services until 1993 Finally there was coffee house/cafeteria - Blind Joe's - open 24 hours starting 1966 which became popular among students studying at Northwestern University., famous for their fryer lids which many people still enjoy today! The late 1960s saw some major changes with fast food restaurants like Arby's coming onto the scene followed by chain restaurants like Pizza Hut making advances past their predecessors such as Taco Bell eventually displacing them all throughout central Illiniense beginning around 1984 or 1985 with Wendy’s taking over nationally following Arby’s departure becoming common place four years later! Today marks quite an event sixty years later when Applebees opens up shop inside City Hall plaza complete with air conditioned dining room making it onestop shop for everything applebees related! marking yet another milestone within our rapidly changing community!

At first it seemed like everything would go well - job growth was expected to top 20%, residential development was planned along State Street between Sixty-fourth Street and Sixth Avenue with over 1 million square feet (100,000 m2) planned for single-family homes - until one major snag: no money could be found to pay for much needed streetlights! After monthslong attempts by local developers to come up with some sort of funding mechanism - often through creative financing schemes such as setting up private equity firms - nothing worked out so construction stopped abruptly less than 12 months after starting while much larger renovation/landscaping bills continued unfulfilled...markHAM'S NEXT GREAT AMERICAN CITY FADES IN A Flash! Markham was founded in 1818 by Nicholas Markham and wife Catherine. The town is named after Nicholas' father, who purchased the land from a Native American tribe. The town was first settled by Quakers and then by Methodists, before becoming a small village. In 1865, the village was merged with the larger town of Markham to form a new municipality. On October 1, 1978, the municipality of Markham was disbanded and its constituent parts were incorporated into the larger city of Chicago.
