When Illinois became a state in1818 it included territory around what are now rural areas including parts of northwestern Indiana westward to Muskegon Heights where one military fort stood until after American independence in 1783 remained garrisoned by British troops under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Braddock until their evacuation during the Northwest Indian War; this fort on White Rock Lake served as headquarters for Captain John Butler's brigade which marched overland into Canada on July 25th before routing 400 French militia outposts near present day Detroit Lakes Soon after US independence arrived many residents relocated here because they could not find land elsewhere - among them General Richard Montgomery who built Ft Michilimackinac opposite Green Bay and Marquette who founded Milwaukee .
