Markham is a village in the Illinois General Assembly district 7. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Markham was organized on February 12, 1871, as a result of a petition by citizens of communities surrounding Deer Park Township. Deer Park Township had been organized on December 14, 1860 and would not be annexed until 1872. Markham's first settler was John Purdy who arrived in 1869 and patented an acre of land in what is now Markham. Mr. Purdy's son-in-law built the first home in what is now town square; it still stands today. In 1881, George Smedley donated 640 acres to the village for development into farmland with a market house and schoolhouse to serve as its first churches and community center. In 1902, when Deer Park Township became Cook County, Markham became part of that county too and lost its own church/community center but retained its market house/schoolhouse donation from George Smedley for future use as their new county courthouse building which still stands today (now used as a business incubation space). In 1924, following annexation by Cook County of Arlington Heights, much like many other villages within Cook County during that time period - including neighboring Oak Lawn -Markham's boundaries changed slightly with additions to include Hinsdale (to its north) and Bridgeview (to its east). The boundary changes lasted until 1959 when all three villages were consolidated into one larger municipality known today as Markham Village Incorporated."
