In 1897, electric lighting arrived in Markham with the installation of two Edison lights by Samuel Insull at what is now Parkland Hospital In 1912, cotton gin production began with harvesting begin on large tracts of land located near present day Winthrop Road and Schaefer Road; this made for an easy market for local farmers as well as providing jobs for local workers during harvest season By 1915 there were over 100 businesses located within walking distance of downtown Markham including several banks (Janes Bank & Trust Company was founded here), two insurance companies (Indiana Mutual Life Insurance Co., Inc.) and ten grocery stores In 1916-17 there was an effort undertaken to bring electricity to all residents through municipally owned wires while at the same time creating new employment opportunities by buildingmarkramontessories using surplus electric equipment imported from America By 1922 over 50% of all business had moved out into larger commercial districts around downtown while just 10% remained within walking distance
