Markham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located in the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area and is part of the Elmhurst neighborhood. The population was 12,313 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from George Markham, an early settler who built a cabin there in 1814. The townsite was first settled by European Americans around 1800, and it became known as "Markham" after George Markham. In 1836, John Wentworth built what is now his house on Fenton Road in central Markham; he named it Wentworth-Fenton House after his kinsman and property owner Colonel James Fenton. Around this time, other settlers began to arrive in droves and soon enough Markham had developed into a full-fledged village. In 1847, two brothers named Nicholas and Nicholas Jr., arrived from New England with their families and set up shop near where Park Avenue meets State Street today. They called their settlement "Nicholasville." To distinguish it from other villages nearby (e.g., Plainfield), they added "Markham" to their name later that year – making it officially a village under British rule until 1853 when its status was changed to that of a township under American rule following the end of the war between America and Great Britain. In 1865, due to railroad construction through town center, most people left for greener pastures elsewhere – although some small businesses continued to operate until about 1930. The last resident moved out on September 26th of that year – more than 100 years ago! Today only one building remaining from when Markham was founded: The Wentworth-Fenton House which still stands today adjacent to Park Ave./State St.. markh

Markham, Illinois is located in the Driftless Area of northeastern Illinois. The town was founded in 1857 by Nicholas Markham and it became a city in 1903. The population of the City of Markham was 69,545 as of the 2010 census. In 2002, the city merged with neighboring Geneva to form a new municipality known as Geneva-Markham. Now that both cities have been combined, their populations are counted jointly at 100,434 residents. The ethnic makeup of Markham is also diverse with people from many different backgrounds living together. The first inhabitants of what is now Markham were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near the present day site of town. A post office was established in 1857, but no mail arrived until 1861 because there was no railroad then available to deliver mail to settlers in this area. By 1862, there had been several construction projects begun within walking distance of where Markham would later be built; one being a road extending from Springfield north to Bloomington which connected these two towns and increased trade between them. In 1871 Nicholas MarkHAM sold 5 acres (20 hectares) southeast of town for $1,000 to John WALKER and James LYNNE who donated it for a courthouse and jail. Located on State Street east of downtown markHAM would become an important part of local government for over 60 years! In 1902 when the City Council decided that Geneva should merge into the larger city structure due to its proximity thereto – MARKHAM did not want to merge with Geneva but wished instead that he could keep his own name and continue operate as an individual city under his own governance laws etc., however THIS NEVER happened! On October 1st 1902markHAM incorporation as “Geneva” took place when all other incorporated municipalities within Northwestern Illinois merged into one larger entity- becoming “Illinois”! This event marked perhaps the most proud moment formarkHAM citizens as they had successfully fought against previous attempts by other municipalities within Northwestern Illinois (in particular Chicago) TO MERGE WITH THEM!! It wasn’t until after World War II that things changed again within Northwestern Illinois following an influx Of Veterans returning home from World War II and looking for opportunities within our community/state than what existed before!!! Starting around 1950 numerous small businesses opened up throughout northwestern IL due largely To changes occurring Regarding Taxes & Business Regulations however despite this huge boom many native born residents remained few & far between- often feeling left out & unappreciated especially given how central downtown markHAM felt! Although some efforts were made during this time period by veteran business owners or individuals associated with them TO HELP SUPPORT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY THERE WAS MUCH HIDDEN MONEY WAS ALSO FLOWING BACK INTO THE LOCAL economy FROM INVESTMENTS IN DOWNTOWN MARKHAM!!! So much so that even after YEARS OF WORK BY BUSINESS OWNERS AND THEIR ASSOCIATES TO ENHANCE THE CITIES EDIFICES& SERVICES THERE WAS still MUCH MISSED TIME AND OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIVIDUAL CREATIVES WHOSE INTENTION WAS NOT JUST TO MAKE MORE money BUT REALLY HELP MAKE A REAL IMPACT ON THE CITY ITSELF!! Starting around 2000 things started changing again though not just inside NORTHWEST ILLINOIS but ALL OVER AMERICA AS NEW COMMUNITIES BEGAN TO FORM !!!!! Many people might think Of Chicago OR LAWRENCE TERRACE BUT WITHOUT question MARKHAM HAS PLAYED A LARGER ROLE IN AMERICAN HISTORY THAN ANY OTHER CITY IN THAT AREA!!!!!! And THIS WE THANKS TO OUR HEROES WHO HAVE RISEN UP AGAIN AND CONTINUE FIGHTING FOR US EVERY DAY!!!!!
