In 1839, Abraham Lincoln came through Illinois on his way to be elected President; he stopped at Sheppard's Prairie on his way home from Springfield. In 1840, Amos Kendall settled near the current site of Markham Village while looking for land to farm; he named the new village "Kendall." In 1845, George Stephenson built a railroad line through MarkhamVillage which connected with the Northwestern Railroad right here at present-day Main Street (the future northbound lanes of I-90). This established MARKHAM as one of northern Illinois' earliest villages with easy access to major cities and transportation hubs like Chicago and Milwaukee. Markham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General David Dixon Markham who served as the commanding general of Union forces during the American Civil War. The village of Markham first appeared on maps in 1834 and was organized as a village on February 12, 1835. On November 4, 1852, it became a town by an act of the Illinois General Assembly. The Village of Markham had its start when articles were published in local newspapers about plans to establish a new post office in what is now the village of Markham. After much discussion, it was decided that a post office should be established within the current limits of present-dayMarkham. Therefore, on February 12, 1835, notice was given to all residents of the village that they were to meet at 6 p.m., that day to select one representative from each household to go before commissioners appointed by President James K. Polk with instructions to develop Post Office regulations which would govern future operations at the new post office called "Fenton". On November 4th (the same day as becoming a town), an actwas passed by the General Assembly providing for incorporation into townships along with other changes made pursuant thereto; however no applications were received for incorporation until April 8th 1870 when two applications were received from Maringham and both were accepted without comment from either body save for one reference that incumbents John Dickson and Cornelius Ewing contribute $1 towards buildng "a public schoolhouse" for their respective villages but no such structure ever materialized or even been discussed! In fact until 1903 when Henry Wirth (of Elmira) applied for incorporation intoMaringham after being made aware of some activity going on within Town Hall he thought his application would be accepted despite having only contributed $5 towards erection! As it turned out Wirth's request was not honored as he soon learned that Townsmen willing/able to pay money also helped build schools within their own municipalities! If you are looking for something more than just average history here you're out of luck - there isn't anything like this anywhere else in America! In spite of this lackadaisical attitude many efforts did eventually get done including: establishment Sunday school classes open unto ALL residents male and female under 16 years old; building400 feet long Public Library which opened its doors July 1st 1892; creating three fire departments including one artifical department; founding Rural School District #2 which included portions of Burr Ridge north then eastward through Fenton township and joining with Hinsdale January 1st 1902 making it an elongated 10 mile radius district paralleling State Highway 57 southward through Lyonsville finally coming together at Markham March 3rd 1904 taking its name from then Congressman David Dixon MarkHAM
