In 1871 Abraham Lincoln accepted an invitation to speak at a meeting held by the board of trustees for St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Grandview Heights about improving transportation in Chicago through horse-drawn cars instead of walking or riding horses; this led to the founding of what would become Markham Township on November 3 that year. On December 8th 1860 Samuel Morse opened up his transmission line between Baltimore and New York City using his own personal telegraph key – thus beginning wire service between those cities without any help from either government officials or entrepreneurs like Morse himself

Markham is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Markham was organized on July 1, 1859, by men who had come to the area from what is now Clearwater Township in Cook County. At its first meeting, it consisted of a total of twenty-six settlers and two commissioners. The first post office in town was established on December 12, 1859; it was renamed Markham on March 3, 1860. In 1865, the village became part of the new city of Chicago when that municipality was formed from parts of Cook and DuPage counties. On November 6, 1886 – one year after Chicago's incorporation as a city – Mayor John Puskar issued an order annexing all remaining unincorporated areas within the limits of the City including Markham. This annexation created what is now Kane County and made Markham one of its most populous villages. In 1951–1953 (the "Markham Years"), residents successfully campaigned for an increase in their water rate by 25%. This increased price helped spur development in nearby Prospect Heights and West Englewood which would eventually lead to downtown MarkHAM becoming home to more than 100 businesses and 2 million square feet (1009 m²) commercial space since 2002! Today's economy revolves around healthcare services with major employers such as Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Group located within walking distance or less; high-tech firms like Googleplex Illinois and Intel Midwest Headquarters are also present near campus; small businesses abound with many stores - especially along State Street - open late into Saturday nights! On July 6, 1847, the first railroad was built in what is now Markham. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad (CML&P), which ran from Chicago to Milwaukee and then to St. Paul, was built by entrepreneur Anthony Dearborn. The CML&P opened in September of that year and helped spur a large population growth in the area; by 1850, there were over 1,000 residents living in Markham. In 1854, the CML&P merged with the Illinois Central Railroad (IC) to form the Great Western Railway (GW). GW became one of the largest railroads in America and played an important role in American history. In 1907, GW merged with the bankrupt New York Central Railroad (NYC) to become part of the huge Penn Central Railway (PC). PC later went bankrupt and ceased operations after 1971.
