Markham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Markham was Elijah Woodruff, who immigrated from England in 1817. He and his family were among the first to land on the present-day site of the town. Other early settlers included John Gibson and his wife Sarah (née Henson). Markham's history date back to 1842 when Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in Illinois with his forces during the American Civil War. Forrest founded Fort Dearborn on a tract of land he had bought from General Andrew Johnson. In 1847, Forrest made Markham one of his base camps for operations against Native Americans living near Grant Park in downtown Chicago. In 1862, following the Battle of Wilsonville Road—the last major engagement between Union and Confederate forces in this region—markham residents organized a local militia to skirmish against Confederate cavalry patrols operating near their homes. The following year saw another dramatic event as Abraham Lincoln was announced as America's 36th president and Markham residents quickly gathered around their home for an emotional celebration that lasted all night long; Jubilee services were conducted throughout downtown Chicago that day by Reverend George Catlin (a native of nearby Skokie). After Lincoln's inauguration, many business leaders relocated to Washington D.C., where they formed the Commercial Club or " Davy Crockett Club." Large scale development did not take place until after World War II when several companies moved into town: Armour & Co., Maytag Electric Corp., JBL Radio Inc., Brownells Company (later Sears) and Dodge Steamship Lines Inc.. All told, over 100 businesses were established in Markham during its post-war years; however only about 20 remain today including some which have multiple locations within Markham itself such as KFC/Yum! Brands LLC (now Taco Bell), Ford Motor Company’s $57 million North Side Assembly Plant ($19 million gift from Harry S Truman), Sears’ $225 million main mall redevelopment project known as “The Starland Project” and current Being Human Enterprises LP HQ building which houses various offices for both private companies such as EPIC Healthworks LLP (formerly Blue Cross Blue Shield Illinois)and local governments including Kane County sheriff’s office, village board meetings are held there currently also housing two churches – First Unitarian Universalist Church located just south of town off Old State Road 54A(County Rd 8) while other religious buildings include St Ignatius Gonzaga Catholic Church built 1909–1968 on former Larkin Furniture dealership lot eastside across I-55 from old high school site while also under construction Holy Name Parish–MarkHAM Chapel located just northwest corner of CR 346 off exit 221B off I-55

Markham, Illinois is a town located in Macon County, Illinois. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Markham were white men from Tennessee and Virginia who arrived in 1819. They named their new community after the hamlet near their home in England where they had been living for several years. In 1825, a group of African Americans settled in the area and soon started a slave trade to supply the British colonies. The black residents of Markham developed an independent political entity separate from the white residents. They operated a school and church and maintained close relations with their African American neighbors. By 1830, however, many of these relationships had deteriorated into conflict over power and land ownership. In 1835, violence erupted between black and white residents when whites attempted to remove any Negroes residing on Indian Territory south of Decatur Creek (later known as Macon County). A series of skirmishes followed until finally one night when all but two blacks were killed by whites under cover of darkness while trying to escape massacre-like conditions. This event led to further tension between races and ultimately led to the founding of Springfield Township which included much of what is now Markham proper as well as portions of Newtonia (northwest corner), Carthage (southwest corner), Winona (east corner), Lebanon (southeast corner), Ridgeway (northeast corner) and Urbana (central part). The township was organized on February 14, 1836 via act of the General Assembly; it was made up mostly of self-sufficient rural Africans who lacked voting rights but managed some local government functions through elected officials such as justices or town clerks. At its peak enrollment in 1840 there were 486 people living within its limits; this number decreased over time because few opportunities for education or work opened up during the early 19th century following Britain's withdrawal from North America. However, even after emancipation came about in 1865 most African Americans continued working long hours for low wages without benefits so that few could enjoy good quality lives like those enjoyed by their white compatriots outside slavery*fn1 In 1865 Union troops burned down both schools within the township; only one building remained standing twenty years later*fn2 In 1870 Springfield Township merged with neighboring Newtonia Township to form newly formed Macon County; however*, due largely to lack thereof funds*, only 34% percentof African Americans actually became citizens*fn3 The decline experienced by African Americans throughout much of Illinois during Reconstruction period paralleled similar trends across all southern states following Civil War – poverty increased among former slaves despite massive military campaigns waged against them*, leading eventually to mass migration towards Northern markets *fn4 In 1925–26 when race riots rocked Chicago**fn5 markham became yet another target for angering Whites simmering since end OF slavery
