Markham is a town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in what is now Markham was French trader François de Saint-Pierre on July 4, 1795. He and his partner Daniel Dufferin founded a trading post on the north side of the Kankakee River near present-day Hinsdale. They named their new settlement after Baron Pierre de Montmorency, who had arrived in America in 1780 as one of Marquis De LaFontaine's fur traders. In 1814, John Wesley Powell and James Fenton explored and mapped much of modern day Illinois while traveling through Macomb County. In 1827 they traverseked the Kankakee River valley from its mouth at Rock Island to its confluence with the Styx River near present-day Lockport before going eastward along that river for about 100 miles before turning back due to bad weather conditions downstream at Cairo (now Chicago). A year later they mapped out what is today Macomb County when they discovered that their original survey had missed several important towns including Markham by about 20 miles. The first settler in what is now Markham was Gideon Greenough who arrived in 1828 from Vandalia, Indiana as part of a group led by General Andrew Jackson during his campaign against Native Americans known as the Black Hawk War (). Markham's first store was built on Ontario Street just south of Broadway between 1840 and 1849 by local farmer John Stone Martin () under general subscription (). After disagreements among members of Stone Martin's family about how best to spend their money (), Markshawes opened another store two blocks northeast on Broad Ripple Avenue in 1850 (). That store became Markshawes & Company which continued to be open until it closed around 1903 (). A second store building Built on State Road 3 north of Broadway also became Markshawes & Company soon after it reopened but this time it operated as an all inclusive saloon until around 1916 when ownership passed hands between different families until it closed again around 1933 (). In 1905 entrepreneur J M Brown started farming operations called Brown Farms off US Highway 20 east of downtown markham which prospered until 1917 when World War I disrupted agriculture production across much North America finally closing down operation some years later . Today there are only traces remaining from those early days including a few small fields scattered throughout rural farmland not too far from downtownmarkham . There have been various attempts over recent decades to resurrect or restore some aspects of that early history however without success so far ..... mostly because people want something to do rather than look at anything historical!
