Markham is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Markham were French colonists who arrived in 1763 and built Fort Dearborn on the current site of the town. The fort was abandoned after a year and a half because of the American Revolutionary War. In 1834, John Davenport founded what would become Davenport Manufacturing Company in what is now Markham Township. During that time, he also operated a gristmill and sawmill which still stand today within town limits. In 1855, one of Davenport's sons organized another lumber company which became known as Jarrell Lumber Company Ltd.. That company built two mills (the first being destroyed by fire in 1897) before merging with another lumber company (the second being sold to Bethlehem Steel Corporation) in 1907 to form Bethlehem-Jarrell Corporation Limited. That corporation built three more mills before it merged with General Motors Corporation effective January 1, 1957 to form GM Corporation Limited. With that merger came responsibility for much of northeastern Illinois and most of Indiana including Markham Township until it was given back to local governing boards followingGM's divestiture fromGeneral Motors during the early 2000s recession. Since then, many new businesses have opened up withintown limits such as Apple Inc., Ford Motor Company, Humble Pie Pizza & Pastry and Sears Auto Parts Plus; while others such as Wawa Buffet continue to serve their traditional food items insideand outsideoftown limits across from downtown Chicago

Markham is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Markham was founded in 1847 by John Markham and his family as a farmstead on what is now the north side of the city of Chicago. The first village meeting took place on November 8, 1847. By 1850, many farmers had moved to the area around Markham and it became known as "The Farm Village." In 1865, town meetings were held at different locations within Markham until they met at a barn which served as their central building until 1909 when they built a new one on land west of present-day State Street. In 1870–71, US Army General George Armstrong Custer stayed at Bigelow’s Tavern while he was stationed near downtown Chicago and Legend has it that General Custer ordered one of his aides to provide him with whiskey for his troops so that he could relax during his march through Illinois. After General Custer's death in 1890, liquor sales stopped in Markham because prohibition began nationally in America that year. In 1896–97 two men from Canada who had come downriver to work on Lake Michigan's Great Lakes shipping did some survey work for Fidelity Bancorp before returning home July 10th 1897 after completing about 2 miles (3½ kilometers) of surveyed line when their boat capsized nearpresent day Sheboygan Falls (the location where their surveyors camped). This event marked the beginning of formal activity by Fidelity Banks' surveys along Dearborn Avenue between State and Randolph Streets - marking now Dearborn Place just east off Randolph Street inside Old Navy Shopping Center next door - this being done mainly for real estate development purposes although some dredging and fill operations have taken place since then also adjacent to Old Navy Shopping Center probably parking lots or open air spaces used currently for that purpose only
