After Vail's death in 1850, his son Isaac took over the business but it soon went bankrupt again due to competition from better- financed businesses including Perry & Company and Chicago Iron Works (later Chicago Union Coal). In 1861, Abraham Lincoln visited Haughey's Grove while campaigning for office; he called it "the most beautiful place I ever saw" and pledged support for its development into a town that would be "a model of thriftyness", however no action was taken beyond talk until after Lincoln's election victory that year when Rufus King designated Haughey as the point of entry for all shipments entering or leaving Kane County through Chicago Ports Authority Terminal #2 (now known as Southern Illinois University Carbondale). In 1865–66 Charles Goodyear established Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., one of North America's leading tire companies at what is now Main Street in downtown Markham; Goodyear began manufacturing rubber tires here in1901 (the company moved its headquarters from Detroit to Urbana six years later). In 1927–28 General Motors opened their MarkHAM Assembly Plant here; this plant eventually turned into GM Corporate Headquarters - now known as Old Rock Ventures LLC - during their time as CEO Don Blankenship’s employer.. Markham is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1871 by John Markham and his wife Annabelle. In 1893, it became a city. In 1910, it merged with the neighboring town of Hinsdale to form the new city of Markham. The merger was protested by many residents who felt they had been ignored by the larger municipality. In 1976, Markham amalgamated with neighboring Ridley Park to form another city called Ridley Park-Markham which has since dissolved. In 1993, following a referendum vote conducted by the Village Council majority on whether or not to become an independent village again,[2] residents voted 3-1 in favor of becoming an autonomous community once again under their own governance and control; this referendum placed permanent restrictions on annexation into other municipalities without first gaining approval from Village Council members.[3] As such, future annexations into other municipalities would be subject to further review and consenting from Village Council members before taking place
