The community was founded in 1855 by Danish immigrants as a landing place for ferries from Copenhagen to the then-new Chicago market. In 1860, John Slinger (1811-1875), an American fur trader and real estate developer in nearby Highland Park, bought land in what is now Markham and named it for his father's birthplace on Zealand island near Odense, Denmark. In 1866, Slinger subdivided his land into lots and built a house on lot #2 which still stands today as the nucleus of the community's first business establishment: A Mr. & Mrs.'s grocery store (later known as Sears). The early days were tough; many of the early settlers had to work odd jobs to support themselves while they waited for their chance to start anew in America. But with hard work and good luck, within just a few short years most of them had found success running their own businesses – including farmer Jens Rasmussen’s grocery store which became one of Illinois’ leading retailers during that time period." There are several reasons why Markham has been so successful over time: its location close to downtown Chicago; its mixture of European immigrants who brought their skills with them when they arrived; and its dedication to quality customer service as well as keeping prices down for residents throughout the years."

Markham, Illinois is a small town in the Kane County region of Illinois. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. The village of Markham was incorporated in 1856 and then annexed by the town of Glendale in 1867. In 1902, the town of Glendale merged with Markham to create one municipality. The first settler in what is now Markham was John and Eliza Hacketman who arrived on July 24th, 1814 from Maine. They were followed by their two children who were also named John and Eliza. By 1860 there were only 13 families living in what is now Markham. In that year, a post office was established at the corner of Main Street and Red Hill Road which served all of Kane County as well as parts of Cook and McLean counties. In 1870, a gristmill was built northwest of present day Markham on the east side of Red Hill Road for flour milling operations by Arent Vail & Company which later became JG Reynolds Companies Limited). At this time it was one of the largest flour mills operating in Illinois outside Chicago (it still operates today). In 1901, whenGlendale merged with Markham to create one municipality, Stonington Creek Dam No 1was constructed downstream upstream from present day Griggs Mill Pond just southof Alma Lake on US Highway 20A (now US Route 22A) providing clean water for residents across southern Kane County including downtown Glendale as well as rural areas northward to Crystal City industrial area located just eastof I-95 near Peoria (the location where Ike Eisenhower Airport presently stands). Today marks an important milestone in local history; since becoming part of One Chicago Mulitmunity-markHAM has experienced significant growth both geographically within its boundaries while additionally leveraging relationships with its sister municipalities - both within One Chicago Municipality but also beyond its borders through affiliations with organizations such as United Way or other nonprofit organizations whose services are general outreach to all types/populations residing within our jurisdictional boundaries- making it possible for MARKHAM residents to access essential community resources without ever having to leave their homes!
