The history of scopes in Marion, Illinois goes back to 1853 when a group of gentleman named H.H. Richardson founded the American Scopes Society. The society was intended to promote science and education by providing a forum for exchanging information about optics and natural sciences. In 1916, the society moved from its original home on State Street in downtown Marion to the current location on Elm Street near the courthouse. Since then, the society has played an important role in promotion of optics and science in the area. In 1954, it donated land at Northwest corner of Elm and State streets for use as a scientific observatory. The observatory is used today as a research center for physics and astronomy students at Northwestern University. One of the most famous members of the American Scopes Society was Louis Agassiz, who also served as president from 1912-1916. Agassiz was instrumental in popularizing both physical anthropology and paleontology during his time as president; he is considered one of the pioneers in modern anthropology. He also developed several instruments used for studying optical phenomena such as telescopes and microscopes. When Marion, Illinois was founded in 1833, the area was a part of the great Western corn belt. The area was originally named for General James H. Marion, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later moved to this area to become a U.S. Senator from Illinois. In 1868, when it became a state, Marion became one of its most populous towns with over 10,000 residents. Today, Marion is an agricultural community with many businesses located along Route 66 and other major highways that connect the town to neighboring Kansas City and Chicago. The first resident of what is now Marion was John Sowell who arrived in 1818 and built his home on land that he donated to the town. After some years they erected a schoolhouse which served as their only public facility until 1850 when they constructed a courthouse which still stands today. The first postmaster in Marion was George Aiken who served from 1852-1857 and then David Fenton took over from him after that year until 1862 when he resigned due to illness. In 1870, Jonathan Litton purchased 500 acres within the present day limits of Marion which made him one of the earliest settlers hereabouts’. He began developing this land into what is now known as “Litton’s Cornfield” where he planted corn and wheat crops for local consumption and sold them at market prices across rural Indiana Territory during the early 19th century before moving westward into Oregon Territory in search of new opportunities for agriculture during the Gold Rush era (1848-1853). Although these early pioneers were self-sufficient farmers with little need for outside assistance or support, they did contribute substantially to both town growth and county infrastructure through purchases such as millstones (for grinding corn) or road building funds during those important decades preceding statehood while also creating secondary economic developments such as blacksmithing shops or taverns serving travelers passing through on their way from Chicago or Kansas City back eastward via Indianola Road/Route 66 corridor crossing Iowa County en route to St Louis or Omaha Missouri! A second wave of pioneers arrived following World War I followed by another following World War II – both waves brought more women into farming families which helped create larger communities characterized by more organized social structures including churches (First Baptist Church being founded in 1915), stores (McDonald’s opening in 1922), grocery stores (PepsiCola tap water available beginning 1949), schools (Marion High School opening in 1929), fire departments (1927 establishment of Volunteer Ambulance Company) as well as other forms of civic engagement typically associated with large metropolitan areas throughout North America at that time! In recent years – thanks largely to advances made by two dedicated individuals: Mayor Donnell Pugh Jr., Sr., whose dedication has resulted in landmark projects like renovations/additions/expansion/updates on downtown core business district; city manager Jeff Dixon; volunteers engaged annually since 2009 resulting not only increased access but improved overall quality & appearance!) – improvements have continued apace including restoration efforts ordained under direction of our current city manager Jeff Dixon bringing much needed attention & modern amenities currently enjoying limited public access formerly accessible only through special event permit process 🙂
In 1817, the United States purchased land in Marion County, Illinois from the government of France. The area was named for General Jonathan J. Marion, who had died in 1794 during the Revolutionary War. In 1836, a school was built on the site of what is now the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first students attended classes in 1840.
