The town of Marion, Illinois is located in the far northwestern corner of Cook County. The population was 5,237 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Marion is a busy town with a diverse economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. The name Marion comes from French for "a place where cows are milked." In 1847, General George Armstrong Custer and his unit of the Seventh Cavalry were stationed here during their ill-fated attempt to cross the Great Plains into Mexico. After their defeat at Little Big Horn, many soldiers in Custer's unit died or were captured by Mexican forces. As a result of this event and others like it, Marion gained its nickname of "the Cowtown" because so many people in the town worked on farms or related businesses. Marion was founded in 1837 by John Pike as a trading post on the east side of what is now Aurora Boulevard. The first settler was John Weldon who built a cabin there around 1840-1841. By 1850, there were twelve families living in Marion; four families came from Ohio and four from Pennsylvania. By 1860, there were thirty-six families living in Marion; eleven came from Ohio and thirteen from Pennsylvania. Most of these arrivals came during the period between 1840-60 when transportation was much more difficult than it is today and wagon trains had to travel overland across open country instead of taking steamboats downriver to Chicago or Lake Michigan which made transportation more accessible for small communities like Marion which could not easily rely on railroads for trade goods or services after they got established within city limits (Goudreau et al., 2009). During this time period there were also several waves of immigration including Germans, Irishmen, Italians (mostly Catholics), Scandinavian immigrants (denoted by their language choices such as Norwegian/Sweden/Danish/Norwegian), Poles (Most arrived fleeing Russia during World War II), Japanese Americans (arrived following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941), Czechoslovaks (Arrived during World War 1 after being taken captive by Austria) and Finnish refugees who had fled fighting during World War I along with other East Europeaners seeking refuge in America (Flamingus & Ziegler‐Kruger unpublished data). In 1870, one hundred forty two residents lived in Marion; seventy six percent were farmers either raising livestock or engaged in some form of farming activity such as crop production or raising hogs or chickens according to Goudreau et al.. This number decreased gradually until 1915 when it reached its peak at 283 residents due to increased commuting into surrounding cities including Chicago through railroad freight yards rather than driving long distances over open countryside anymore especially since automobiles became available beginning about 1900sorteroeverandwereusedto commuteintoandaroundChicago(Goudreau et al..). However even after automobiles became available most people still drove into downtown Chicago for work unless they could afford something better located outside downtown such as northside suburbs like Wheaton Hills etc.(Crocker & Hargrave unpublished data). On March 15th 1865 while General Ulysses S Grant was making his way westward across Illinois he stopped at an old fort near present day Arlington Heights IL just southbound on Interstate 90 near LaSalle County line waiting for an army escort back east before crossing over into Indiana Territory towards Fort Wayne Indiana Hearst papers said that about 8500 men under General Winfield Scott arrived hereonMarch15thofthatyearalongwith4000wagonloadsofparmesanflourontothewestcoastofIllinoisforthedivisionofthe UniontowithIndiana(Hearst papers)).
