In 1916, an industrial park was developed adjacent to the old school site which led to increased growth for Marion over time In 1941, when World War II began local residents helped build a military airfield near their town as part of Project Aztec (later known as Army Air Forces Base Northwest). After hostilities ended in 1945, many residents returned to their normal lives but some continued to live at the airfield until it closed in 1996-97 due to budget cuts within Defense Department plans. In 2006-2007 an effort spearheaded by local resident Jeanne McNeely resulted in restoration and renovation of two outbuildings at the former airfield which has resulted in more than doubling its current size! Today Marion boasts excellent schools including Stritch Catholic School District #1A (K-12), Sacred Heart High School (9th - 12th grades), East High School (11th grade), West Side Baptist Church (Middle & High Schools) & Emmanuel United Methodist Church (Church basement). There are also several businesses such as convenience stores Chevron gas station & Pizza Hut; Ford dealership; KOCH power plant; auto parts store Giant Eagle & tractor dealership. One major event that takes place annually in anticipation of Columbus Day is "The parade", which usually starts around 5pm each year opposite Community Center where there's usually food trucks available for purchase along with games for children

In the year 1881, Marion was founded by two brothers, Hiram and David Smith. They named their town after the daughter of one of their parents, who had died in a childbirth while they were living in Pennsylvania. The Smiths brought over their mother's family to live in Marion and built a mill on the banks of the Illinois River. By 1892, the mill had been bought by John J. Dooley and became known as Dooley Mill. In 1922, Dooley Mill was sold to Harvey Wiman who renamed it Wiman Mill. The mill continued to be used for grinding corn until it closed in 1973. Marion is located at (41.816667,-87.566667). As of the 2010 census, its population was 16,902. It is part of Peoria County and has a total area of 362 square miles (1,000 km2). The racial makeup of Marion is 97% white and 2% black or African American according to the 2000 census data; there are no Hispanic or Latino residents in Marion according to that count. The early history of Marion can be traced back to 1871 when two brothers named Hiram and David Smith founded the town on land donated by their father-in-law Jacob Dickson Sr.. The town was originally called “Spencer” after Hiram’s brother Spencer Alexander Ackermann who lived nearby at that time. In 1892 John J Dooley purchased John J Dooley & Son’s gristmill from Hiram Smith which became known as Dooley Mill thereafter due to its ownership by Mr Dooley alone until his death in 1922md thereby making it an independent entity separate from both Peoria County Governmentalities however still under county jurisdiction because all public works within said boundaries were conducted through said Governmentality including but not limited to school buildings etcetera etcetera) However during World War II when production at said mill increased due To wartime needs specifically for war materials such as rubber products aluminum cans etcetera did not come into play so much as store goods such as flour etc.) And finally Mills closing down becoming lost archives with period records often being destroyed due mainly theretofore unknown individuals itemizing what ever property purchaseed/closed down thereby making research very difficult if not impossible A few examples include: HIRAM SMITH--1871-1892 DAVID SMITH--1922-1973 JOHN J DOOLLEY--1922-1973 HARVEY Wiman--1973-1974
