Marion, Illinois is a town located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,695 at the 2010 census. The name Marion comes from the French word for "hill" and "tree". The town was founded in 1846 by MajorGeneral Israel Putnam after he unsuccessfully campaigned to become a U.S. Senator from Illinois. The first post office in Marion was established on January 1, 1846. It was renamed Unionville in 1848 due to the influx of settlers from Union County, Indiana who were fleeing violence there. In 1861, Marion became an independent municipality when it merged with Bloomington into the new county of Kane County. In 1916, Marion's two-story red brick school building became home to the first high school in Kane County and is still used today as part of First Baptist Church (now known as First Presbyterian). From 1919 until its closure in 1991, the Garfield School District served as educationally mandated successor to Unionville Township High School which closed that year due to budget cuts made by then-Kane County Superintendent John Vlachos Jr.. In 1961–62, Marion voters passed a resolution authorizing annexation by Carbondale; Carbondale incorporation occurred on November 3rd of that year. However, annexation did not occur because Carbondale failed to pay property taxes on what would have been their own land parcel within Marion! This same year saw construction begin on what would soon be one of America's most famous shopping malls – Arches Mall – which opened its doors in 1967 followed by another mall built nearby – Kmart Center – thirteen years later. These developments helped rev up commercial activity around town and brought more people and money into town during what was once a struggling agricultural community plagued with poverty and alcohol addiction since prohibition began over sixty years earlier! Today much like when it initially emerged as a thriving small town back before Prohibition ran its course - all businesses are dry - some residents still cling onto traditions such as Saturday night live music at The Ark which has been going strong since 1978 while others enjoy local festivals throughout the summertime including Pumpkinfest & MapleFest!
