Marion is a small town in Illinois. It is located on the west side of the state, about 20 miles southwest of Chicago. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. The name Marion comes from French for "humble lot." The first settler in what is now Marion was James White. He and his family built their log cabin on a hill in 1797. By 1825, there were over 100 people living in Marion. The township was organized in 1837, and the first post office was established in 1840. In 1851, the name of the town changed to Arlington after General George Washington's home County seat, Arlington County, Virginia. In 1916, when World War I began, many residents of Marion enlisted in the military to serve their country. Many men worked as farmhands or died during war efforts such as building trenches and bridges across rivers and canals. After the war ended, many farmers left Marion for reasons such as high taxes or poor soil quality; however, a few families kept farming until around 1950 when suburban development began to take hold throughout much of eastern Illinois. Today's economy primarily revolves around manufacturing with some light agriculture also taking place; however most businesses are located within walking distance of each other making shopping easy and convenient for all involved including school children who frequent local pharmacies for medications and snacks before going back to classes or visiting family members at homes nearby (many stores have self-checkout terminals). Marion, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 3,581 at the 2010 census. Marion became a city in 1907 and had a population of 5,898 as of the 2000 census. The town is named after General Andrew Jackson's wife and namesake for much of what is now Marion County, Marion Township and parts of Posey and Winnebago Counties were also part of Jackson County when it was organized in 1809. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Marion County were French-Canadian traders who established trading posts along the Fox River from 1793 to 1814. By 1830, about 60% of all white farmers in general area had arrived from various European backgrounds with most coming from England or Ireland. In 1835, an Act providing for township organization within Jackson County was approved by the legislature; however, due to Indian hostilities during that year's Native American War (1834-1836), only Posey Township was organized until 1838 when Winnebago Township merged into Posey County as well. In 1840, considerable land east and north of present day Posey/Winnebago Twp., including portions now in Posey/Winnebago Twp., Decatur Township (now Streator),and some adjacent unincorporated areas east and south of present day Marion were purchased by James Kephart from Wabash Indians under Treaty 9 (1840). This purchase constitutes one reason why many people identify with the city name rather than simply "Marion." In April 1907, City Council voted to adopt a resolution recognizing Columbus Day as America's national holiday. On July 4th following this vote, President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order No. 10409 creating Thanksgiving Day as an official U.S. national holiday on October 8th - three months later than Congress' annual appropriation allowed for! As countrywide observances grew more popular over time (euphemistically called "national days"), holidayslipitations began to affect local governments which tried toalign their own calendars so events occurred on similar dates each calendar year regardless of whether they coincided with America's actual date(s). This led to increasingly complex legal challenges culminating in Judge John Janklow v. United States (1937) which ruled that any attempt by a municipality to adjust its calendar unilaterally would be nullified under federal law unless Approved by both Congress and the president! Though not without controversy at times given discrepancies between municipal calendars & those mandated by statute or judicial rulings nationwide - especially during World War II when military requirements permitted shortened vacations & other types OF holiday開始!! - Marionshift eventually recognized several nationally significant holidays throughout its history: Independence Day on July 4th (1945); Memorial Day on May 25th (1949); Labor Day on September 3rd (1963); & Christmas Eve on December 6th thru 7th inclusive! A numberous businesses locate near downtown Marion including Macy's Department Store Annex (), Sears Roebuck & Co./Empire Sporting Goods (),nl Sears Optical Shop (), BJC Penney () && Sams Club (). Other major employers include ILWU Local 770 which provides health care services (); Northwestern Mutual Financial Services (); Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (); First National Bank ()); PNC Bank (). There are also numerous small shops and restaurants serving primarily regional cuisine such as Grits And Gravy restaurant (), Chicago Pizza (), DeKalb Market Place () && Lakeview Diner (). Downtown business districts include The District ()&& The Village (). There are also several parks availableincluding Olivette Park (), Garfield Park ()&& Crystal Springs Park ().
In 1837, a group of settlers, led by Reverend John P. White and his wife Sarah, moved from the town of Marion, Illinois to what is now Marion, Indiana. The first white person to live in what is now Marion was John White. He built a cabin on the banks of the Wabash River in 1837.
