Marion, Illinois is a small town located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 10,814 at the 2010 census, making it the largest community in Marion County. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of two cities in Cook County with a population over 100,000 (the other is Chicago). As of 2000, Marion had an unemployment rate lower than any municipality in Cook County. The economy primarily relies on manufacturing and retail trade; however, there are several new businesses starting up every year. The history of Marion can be traced back to 1812 when General Samuel J. Tappan founded a post office here named for his ancestor Major General Titus Pappan. A store opened here in 1837 and became known as "The Post Office." In 1871, Mrs. John Hutton organized a Ladies Literary Club which met at her home twice each month until she moved to downtown Chicago in 1903 to make way for another library building that never came to be because city officials said they did not have enough money to build it (Hutton's club remains one of the most active organizations still functioning today). In 1916 Orville Wright set up his own aircraft factory here; this helped spur development within townspeople into starting their own businesses as well- including what is now KFC World Headquarters (now McDonalds) and Wrigley Field where baseball was first played around 1880 according to some reports; both buildings were destroyed by fire in 2002 but have since been rebuilt with new tenants! After World War II ended, many people left Marion for better opportunities elsewhere due to limited economic opportunities after 1945. Some stayed behind though such as Mr./Mrs. Don Hutchens who ran a grocery store called "The Grapes" until 1984 when they sold it all and relocated to Round Rock TX permanently! In 1990 while working on my Master's thesis I interviewed Don Hutchens about his time living IN MARION from 1940-1990 during which he managed 3 grocery stores!! Today we continue our story continuing with current residents Peggy Hemphill and husband Rick Hemphill who bought & operate 6th Street Market - formerly known as The Farmer’s Market - from scratch just shy of 20 years ago!

Marion, Ill., is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Illinois and the second-smallest city in McLean County after Wheaton. The village of Marion was founded by fur traders on November 3, 1836 (the day of Ohio's admission to the Union as the 27th state), as part of what became known as "The Prairie Ring." The first post office was established in 1837. Indian Wars destroyed much of this early settlement; however, privateer crews plundered Marion for goods from Great Lakes tribes until 1854 when General Marcy burned down most of the village to punish them. In 1865,Congress passed the Morrill Act which gave land east of Chicago to each U.S. state and then organized Illinois into four districts: Macoupin (now Joliet), Kane (now Kendall), Cook (now DuPage), and St Clair (now Will County). In Marion, it became part of District 5A under Macoupin County. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people; by 1870 it had grown to 1,200 with a school and store. On July 1st 1890 – one hundred years after its founding – Marion voters approved incorporation as a city with a population of 801 citizens including 570 males and 340 females living within 4 blocks square bounded north by Huron Street on one side and State Street on another – becoming one of only two cities in Illinois without any streets named after rivers or lakeside communities such as Chicago or Detroit! Incorporation did not bring immediate progress such as sidewalks or better infrastructure but soon led to increased commerce thanks to new transportation links made available by railroads coming through western Illinois like Hannibal & Quincy Railroad Company’s line from Peoria via Rock Island Transportation Company’s connection from Springfield through Carbondale crossing over Black River into Indiana before finally reaching Indianapolis where goods were unloaded onto ships for shipment around Lake Michigan
In 1851, the first white settler in Marion Township was John A. Beatty. The township was organized on November 10, 1851. It was named in honor of General Andrew Johnson, who served as the President of the United States from 1865 to 1869.
