The town grew slowly but steadily over the next hundred years, becoming one of Illinois' most important communities.

The town of Marion was founded by a group of farmers in 1839. The town grew rapidly after it was chosen as the location for a federal court in 1847. The courthouse, which is still in use today, was built on the site of an earlier mill. The town developed into a small village and later became a city.
