Marion, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name originated from the Sioux word "mar-a-ni," meaning " valley". The first settler in Marion was Abram Price. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River in 1827. In 1829, he married Sarah Lyon and they started a small grocery store with their daughter Submitette. They also raised chickens and beef cattle on their farm until about 1840 when Abram Price died suddenly of an illness that he had never seen before. His wife continued to run the store until her death in 1873. In1892, John Fenton bought land east of town from Abram Price's widow Sarah Lyon for $3200 dollars cash. He planned to build a cotton plantation but it never came to fruition because of lack of interest by buyers or investment by Fenton himself. Fenton's grandson Charles Fenton decided to give Marion its present form as it exists today when he donated land south of town to be used as an agricultural center for his community which would include housing, businesses and schools. In 1906 Charles Fenton donated another piece of land east of town to become what is now known as Veterans Memorial Park after World War I veterans who have passed through Marion since 1919 including PFC George Aiken (USMC), Sgt Joseph Jernigan (USAF) and Pvt Leroy Bogan (USAR). A new elementary school was built on this property in 1959; later renamed after Mrs Edna Hynes who served as principal from 1951-1957; then Mrs Eva Juhl who served from 1957-1960; finally Mrs Margie Simpson who served from 1960-1982; all without any public funding which continues today thanks to private donations by individuals like yourself! On November 1, 1814, General James K. Polk was elected the 44th president of the United States, defeating incumbent Andrew Johnson. The following year saw a significant event in Marion’s history when it became the state capital. On February 12, 1915, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill appointing John P. Ney as the first African American to serve as a justice on the state Supreme Court. This event helped create an environment that would allow for more opportunity and progress for African Americans in Illinois. The next year saw another milestone in Marion’s history when school children from both sides of town gathered together to sing “Marchingto Missouri” at a park in downtown Marion. This event served as an example ofUnity between races and helped pave way for future advances for African Americans throughout Illinois. In 1916, three African American men were killed by white supremacists while working on a farm north of town. This tragedy caused many people in Marion to come together to demand better treatment from their government and began the “ Negroes against lynching campaign” which would continue until after World War II
Marion was founded in 1834 by a group of men from Illinois. The town was named for General David Dixon, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first Post Office was established in Marion on July 1, 1835. In 1865, Marion became a county seat and remained so until 1914.
