Marion, Illinois is a small town located in the eastern United States. The population of Marion was 4,052 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town is named after General James K. Polk who served as President of the United States in 1848-1849 and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his work in helping to keep America safe during the Mexican–American War. The first people to live in Marion were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals near what is now downtown Marion. In 1836, Captain John Prentice founded a ferry service between Chicago and Quincy, Illinois on the Mississippi River. This made it easier for goods to be transported from Missouri to Illinois without having to go through Iowa or Kansas City. Captain Prentice also built a store on State Street which became known as “Prentice’s Store” until it was torn down in 1911 by developers looking for a new development center for their new city of Chicago just south of town. In 1840, Henry Clay Tucker purchased land east of downtown Marion from George Eastman which he used as pastureland for his horses and cattle. Tucker began building a house on this property which would become known as “Tucker’s House” until it burned down in 1903 due to an electrical fire that started while Tucker was home cooking dinner. However, this fire did not douse all of Tucker’s ambition to build a courthouse on this site because he continued working along side engineer Elijah Whitehead designing plans for what would eventually become one of America’s most famous landmarks – the first use of air conditioning indoors! In 1846, Reverend Wm Hite organized a group called Methodists into two separate churches: One church stood across State Street from where today’s Masonic Temple stands; and another church moved up Main Street where present day First Baptist Church stands today (currently used by law enforcement). Reverend Hite also built what is still considered one of Marion's earliest schools – Valley Female Seminary which opened its doors on December 1st, 1846 with twenty-two students! On October 15th, 1850 at 7:00 PM local time Union troops under General Winfield Scott attacked Indian village located about six miles west-northwest (and two miles north-south)of modern day Marion on leased lands owned by David Dixon & Co.. After three days戦中、5 Officers including Major General Shields killed 497 Pequot Indians including women children & elderly men before they retreated back into their villages with few losses among themselves despite heavy casualties sustained by our brave troops throughout ground fighting including bayonet charges etc….. The U.S. government began developing the land into agricultural lands used for growing crops such as corn and wheat. By 1860, about 95% of the town's residents were farming families; there were also a few small businesses in operation. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech in which he discussed plans to improve farming methods and increase production on Ulysses S Grant's new farmlands in central Illinois. This speech helped spur development in Marion because it demonstrated that Ulysses S Grant wanted to help grow food for local consumers rather than sell crops to overseas buyers.
