The population was 47,711 at the 2010 census, making Marion one of the most populous cities in Illinois. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The history of Marion can be traced back to 1814 when Lieutenant Colonel George Bird Grigsby founded a small post on what is now West Side Highway (now I-88) near present-day Marion City Limits. The post served as an outpost for Grigsby's brigade during the Black Hawk War against Native Americans. In 1834, Grigsby sold his land to Elijah Todd and John Gist for $1,000 and moved his family to what is now Marion Township. In 1837, Griggsby donated 350 acres (160 km2) to become Marion Township which included current day parts of west side highway and east side highway today known as southwest street corridor In 1839, Catherine Todd married David Wills who arrived in America from Scotland with his family in 1840. They started a farm on land that would later house downtown Marion on Neilson Street today known as Old Town Square David Wills died suddenly while working on their farm in 1840; Catherine Todd took over running their farm until her death in 1861 In 1862, Robert Stephenson built a railroad through central Illinois from Carbondale to Rock Island . Railroad tracks were cut through rural areas including parts of west side highway now located in downtown Marion On July 4th 1860 David Wills' widow CatherineTodd gave birth to their only child: Robert Stephenson Wills Jr., also called "Bob" In 1865 Mrs.Wills gave birth to another son: James Hallett Wills who became an attorney and judge at Marshall County Circuit Court before dying young at age 36 years old there in 1971

Marion, Illinois was named after Marion County, Ohio, in 1836. The county seat of the town of Marion was established in 1837 and it became a part of Chicago in 1847. In 1871, the city of Chicago annexed the village of Marion and it became a part of the City of Chicago on December 3, 1903. On October 15, 1907, the Township of Niblack was organized from parts of the south side suburb parks district to form an unincorporated community within the city limits. The township had a population of 605 as of 2000. The first post office for Marion opened on November 1, 1850. It was located on State Road 16 near what is now Wacker Drive. The first store in town was built by George Hinton and operated from a tent under his property until he erected a frame building at Fourth Street and State Road 16 on July 20, 1857. A second store was built by John Sennett at Seventh Street and State Road 16 on November 4th. In 1861 Jnoah Sprague opened a general store at Third Avenue and State Road 16 which continued to be run until 1888 when it caught fire and burned down; Sprague also rebuilt it with assistance from friends but it closed again in 1902-04 due to lack of business activity; this store is still standing today as apartments are being built there). In 1865-66 Fenton Bemis added groceries to his grocery business at Seventh Street and State Road 16; this operation continued until 1886 when he sold out to James McNaught who renamed his business Eastern Market Grocery Co.; Eastern Market prospered until 1911 when McNaught sold out to Amoskeag Bros., Inc.; that company operated for about 25 years before closing up shop in 1951-53 due mainly to competition from large box stores opening up around that time throughout Illinois (the last Eastern Market location closed down in Evanston IL). A post office called "Grace"opened on January 1st, 1870 at Second Avenue west of Randolph Boulevard; this location served as both an mail drop for local farmers' markets as well as receiving letters sent directly to Chicago through Union Pacific Railroad's Elmhurst Branch whereupon they were delivered into downtown Chicago via two delivery wagons which stopped outside each house along Second Avenue waiting for recipients inside or outside while one driver took care Of delivering letters directly into downtown buildings without stopping anywhere else) The first tractor dealership open here too: Valentine & Sons - bought by Valentine Bros./Valentine Tractor Sales Co.; owned by Valentine Bros./Valentine Tractor Sales Co/John Dolan (later owner/operator/director etc.) operators trucking materials confiscated during Chinese Exclusion Act raids 1915-1918
On November 3, 1868, the first election in Marion was held. The vote resulted in a victory for the Republican candidate, James J. Weldon.
