The history of Marion dates back to 1847 when it was founded as a steamboat landing on the Kankakee River by Judge John Swayne and his family. In 1868, Marion became the seat of Marshall County after being chosen by the General Assembly from a set of five towns in that county. On January 1, 1870, Marion became a city through an act of the state legislature. The city's first mayor was A.J. Smith and its first vice president Wm Hargrave. The early residents were mostly farmers who raised cattle and pigs for their own use and for sale to other farmers in surrounding counties. By 1910, most of the original residents had died or moved away, but some remained in Marion until after World War II when they all relocated to Carbondale, Illinois due to rising living costs in Marion compared to other nearby cities.
