Their settlement became known as Massa's Station after Nicholas' brother-in-law John Ransom (1771–1848) purchased more land around it and developed it into an agricultural community known as Ransomville. In 1815, Samuel Morse opened a trading post at Ransomville which became the nucleus of today's downtown Macomb. In 1836, David Dixon founded Ridgefield Township () when he bought 3 acres (1 km²) southeast of present-day Mount Pleasant from John Sennett (). Dixon renamed his township after himself and laid out its boundaries based on those surveyed by him: northward to Clinton; eastward to Detroit; southward to Grand Rapids (); westward to Oak Park (). Ridgefield Township contained only 6 residents when it was organized; by 1860 it had grown to over 100 residents with 30 businesses and $10 million in property value (). Dixon also donated 1/4 mile (0.8 km²) of riverfront land between Clinton Avenue and River Road for commercial development. This section now constitutes much of Downtown Macomb with its many buildings dating back to this time including the General Motors Building (), Chrysler Building (), Ford Motor Company Building (), Metro Sindicate Tower (), etc.. A special election held November 5, 1906 resulted in Republican George Hager becoming Governor of Illinois while incumbent Democrat Abraham Lincoln ran for re-election as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President ().
