Macomb is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,730 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town started as a small hamlet on the edge of present-day Macomb Township and was named after Major General John Montgomery Macomb. It became a village in 1872 and continued to grow until it had a population of 12,000 by 1900. In 1907, it merged with neighboring Streator to form what is now Macomb Township. Most of the growth in Macomb took place outside of its downtown core which remain largely unchanged since then. One notable exception has been the construction of Interstate 90 east of town which completely destroyed much of the downtown core and replaced it with new commercial districts. Today, Macomb remains one of Cook County's most rural communities with many farms and small towns located along its several streams that provide drinking water for many homes and businesses within its borders. The economy is based primarily on agriculture with some light manufacturing activities conducted in smaller villages around town such as Streator and Riverview Heights. Additionally, several large employers include BellSouth and Medtronic Incorporateds facilities within walking distance from almost all residents within city limits

Macomb, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 138,827 at the 2010 census. Macomb is the second largest city in Cook County and the fifth-largest city by population within Chicago metropolitan area. It is also one of the most populous cities in Northwestern Illinois. The first settlements in what is now Macomb were made on Mayflower land by Puritan colonists from Plymouth Colony on October 16, 1688. The town of Northfield was chartered on December 12, 1796 as part of a larger agreement between Jonathan Trumbull and George Washington that provided for a series of small towns to be formed throughout Northwest Indiana and Upper Michigan Territory (now Michigan). On January 1, 1818, under General Order No. 5 of 1818, all but two villages within Northwest Indiana were placed under the administration of an act entitled "An Act to settle certain points in said territory." These two villages were not included within the new Macomb township - they continued to be administrated as part of neighboring Whitehall Township until their incorporation into Macomb Township on November 3rd 1822 On February 14th 1870, during congressional Reconstruction following the American Civil War and with voting rights restoration following reconstruction legislation passed by Congress), Abraham Lincoln was elected President of America and appointed Governor John P. Stevens as his Vice President; both men had been residents or residents' children living in Springfield while they served as high commissioners for Missouri and Illinois respectively after being removed from office via impeachment proceedings brought against them during the wartime presidency of Andrew Johnson During World War II much activity took place outside Cook County limits due to military production plants located there such as Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Plant which manufactured tanks and artillery pieces for Allied forces In 1955 Edwin Haughton became Mayoralty when Clarence Kilpatrick resigned effective November 15th due to health reasons Kiffin succeeded him later that year . In 1957 Stanley Dyck became City Manager when Haughton left office . In 1960 Michael J. McCormick became City Clerk when Dyck left office
On November 3, 1814, Macomb was founded as a town in the territory of Illinois by John Stephenson. On October 15, 1818, it became a city. The city was named for General James K. Polk and his wife Julia M. Grant.
