Macomb is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Macomb County. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Macomb were French Jesuits, who founded a mission in 1796 on an island in the Kawkawasis River about upstream from present-day Macomb Township. A second Jesuit mission was established in 1812 on land southeast of present-day Macomb Township, across from what is now St.[gael]s Point Road. Jesuit missionaries were followed by Methodists until 1847 when both denominations merged into one church, the Methodist Episcopal Church (USA). In 1867–68, a group of local farmers organized as the Reform Party won control of the government and proposed building a courthouse and jail in downtown Dresden because they felt that other nearby towns were not doing enough to support their community. In 1886, Alfred Saginaw became president pro tempore (president for a year) of the Michigan House of Representatives after being elected as part of an anti-corruption ticket that included Representative John Prentice Butler; he served two terms before his resignation to become vice president under Grover Cleveland's first term as President United States (1889–1893). On November 3, 1889, Saginaw was succeeded by his brother Augustus Saginaw as president pro Tempore; Augustus then served two terms until 1893 when he resigned to become mayor of Detroit. From 1893 until 1915 there was only one mayor per term with no additional executive power beyond those granted by law or gubernatorial appointments; this system continued through World War I when mayoral powers increased gradually but fully under Mayor James WOODRUFF.) During Prohibition years starting 1920 until 1933 it also functioned as "the dry town", meaning that alcohol could be bought unlimitedly without having to go through channels like grocery stores or liquor stores where it would have been taxed and sold ownerially rather than rented out like most other businesses during that time period. Macomb is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,451. The Village of Macomb was incorporated on February 26, 1853. It is named for General James Macomb and his family who were early settlers in the area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Macomb were French traders in 1678. fur trader Jacques Marquette brought Jesuit missionaries overland from Quebec two years later and founded Fort Dearborn on the current site of Chicago in 1679. The area around present-day Macomb was part of the Peoria Indian Confederacy until 1777 when the Treaty of Ripon ceded all of Michigan including present-day Illinois to Great Britain. In 1803, John Yates located a claim on land that would become known as Yates Township while working with George Stephenson in developing the Erie Canal project. In 1814, Stephen Tabor organized a township at what is now Round Lake Heights and named it after himself; this became Galena Township (now Springfield) in 1835 when Galena Township merged into McDonough County. On July 1, 1847, five townships – Carroll Township (now Addison), Clinton Township (now Elmhurst), Madera Township (now Highland Park), Norwood Township (now River Forest), and Smallwood Township (now Harvey Park) – were created from parts of McDonough County by act of the Illinois General Assembly under Ulysses S Grant's presidency as part of broader efforts to create new states within the United States during his presidency. It would be another 10 years before any other communities were established within Macomb; however services began appearing along US Route 43 soon after that route was rerouted through town center following an 1886 railroad strike which shortened travel time between Milwaukee and Chicago from days to hours. A post office called Manchester opened on October 15th 1850; it closed on November 3rd 1870 due to lack of mail service through macdonald county at that time). At this time most residents lived near their jobs or businesses inside town limits where transportation options were limited or nonexistent beyond walking or biking distance except for occasional trains running southward via Peoria Junction Railway Company tracks past Hebron Hills towards Moline which served as a stopover for travelers coming upriver from Ilinois via curve into Dodge City Crossing Railroad line
The city of Macomb was founded on April 1, 1806 by Captain John Cook and his men after they completed their journey from Detroit. The town was named for General James Mackenzie who fought in the War of 1812. At first, the town consisted only of a few homes and a small market. The first store in Macomb opened its doors on December 20, 1807. By 1800, there were over 200 businesses operating in Macomb. In 1865, the Macomb County Courthouse was built and served as the seat of government until 1910 when it became the county jail. In 1926, the present day United States courthouse was built next to the old county courthouse which is now used as an office building. Macomb is home to several important cultural institutions including: Symphony Hall (opened in 1903), Ford Community College (opened in 1961), and Macombsi Park (opened in 1954).
