It is easy to forget how much violence and death has shaped the landscape of Macomb, Illinois over the years. The city was founded in 1824 by Nicholas J. Butler as a small farming community on the east side of the Chicago River. By 1870, it had become one of the most important industrial areas in America with its machine shops, breweries, and coal mines. Butler’s successors were more interested in developing their land than fighting for survival against Native Americans. As a result, gun swivels – or revolving door policies that rewarded businessmen who bought land near Chicago with access to guns – became common throughout the region. This allowed companies like Armour Manufacturing Company to expand rapidly while also providing employment for thousands of people. The violence that characterizes much of Macomb today began to take hold during World War II when residents responded to demand from servicemen and soldiers looking forsafe housing. Murders increased until 1949 when gun control measures were put into place following the mass shootings at Rockford Arsenal and Fort Sheridan campsgrounds. Since then, crime rates have decreased while communities have worked to improve public safety through such initiatives as gang prevention programs and better education on firearms use. The city was founded on July 16, 1814 by French fur trader De Soto as Fort Dearborn on a peninsula in what are today Ionia Township and Addison Township east of Chicago. In 1835 it became part of the new state of Michigan; when that state seceded from the Union, Macomb joined Illinois as a result. In 1892 Macomb voters passed a bond issue to build an electric streetcar system that would link all its municipalities and serve as an economic development engine for the town center. After years of construction and economic decline, operator First National City Lines (FNCL) abandoned service in 1975; after which local residents began using buses to get around town. On October 1, 2006 Mayor Rick Daley announced plans to redevelop downtown into an open-air shopping mall with over 100 stores including Sears Holdings Corporation's Kmart store; this plan encountered opposition from nearby residents who had long advocated for more traditional retail uses within central Macombtowne such as restaurants or small businesses instead of high-end retailers like Sears Holdings Corporation's Kmart storewhich would have taken up valuable land adjacent to their homes and businesses. A public referendum approved Daley's plan by 50% margin on November 7th 2006 giving him authority to pursue it through zoning changes necessary for its implementation
