There has been a long and gun-centric history in Macomb, Illinois. The area was first home to the Potawatomi Nation, who hunted small game and fished in the waterways. At some point, the village of Macomb grew up around this hunting and fishing culture. In 1851, a German immigrant named Friedrich Wilhelm Schwarz bought land in what is now Macomb Township. He established a mill here that would produce flour for local purposes and alsoexport raw materials such as lumber to other parts of the United States. In 1855, another German immigrant named Friedrich Hirsch set up a tannery on the same lot where Schwarz’s mill stood. This tannery produced leather for shoes, saddles, and other goods. It was also one of the few operations in Macomb that did not shut down due to economic conditions during the Great Depression of 1929-1933. In 1872, John Fenton opened a general store at remains of his father’s old mill on State Street in present day Macomb Township. Fenton became known throughout central Michigan as “the Father ofMacombsi” because he helped start various rural communities thereabouts (e.g., Romeoville). By 1910, macombsi were being smoked out of their traditional formaldehyde cigarettes by American Tobacco Company executives seekingTo improve product quality over those made with Native American tobacco products (see below). Cigarette smoking spread rapidly through many Midwestern cities during World War I as soldiers turned to cigarettes as an alternative to soldiering on harsh military campaigns abroad (e.g., Battle Creek; Manila Bay Philippines; China; Zamboanga Peninsula). The first store in town was built by Solomon Saginaw on Clark street north of present day First National Bank building which still stands today across from current day Union Station - originally called "Saginaw's Store". In 1850 A&P grocery store opened up on what is now Third Street east of Grand River Avenue near where Armour Stadium now stands also this store became known as "Olde A&P." In 1861 John Fenton established a flour mill about one half mile northeast of town northwest of present day M-G-M department store - this mill remains operational to this day providing local food for locals including many Military families stationed in Macomb during World War II who would come into town for groceries before their planes flew back home! In 1865 Mr. & Mrs Jane Goodridge settled in what is now Macomb after moving from Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan – they were the first white family to live permanently within sight or reach of downtown Chicago at that time On October 3rd 1865 Appleton’s Weekly Journal reported: “A very large quantity ol wild fruit has just arrived here from Detroit via Holland Springs road…the trees are being loaded with fruit while we type these lines….a wagonload or two more will be brought tomorrow bringing a total weight said to be several hundred bushels….This Week’s Market has been pretty fair with prices ranging from 12c per bushel to 34c per bushel depending upon quality…Fruit pure or unadulterated appears almost invariable at whatever price given…..I have not seen any good apples since I went out last week but there are always some handy among those picking apples late ” With over 100 years under its belt,Macombs history can be split into various eras such as pioneer days (1837-1860), agricultural/farming era 1860-1910 (1910-1920), post WWII boom decade 1920-1940 (1940-1960), modern era 1960-present . Many interesting events have occurred throughout these years such as Joe Louis becoming heavyweight champion in 1938, WWII recruitment drive starting 1942–1945 led by Mayor Richard J Daley – 50% black soldiers enlisted during war; Gay liberation protests taking place 1969–1970 which turned violent leading to arrests; riots erupting following football game between Bears and Lions Sept 1979 which left 3 dead and scores wounded; establishment of McLean Gardens housing development around 1974 followed by rapid gentrification process which helped turn Macombs old industrial neighborhoods into luxury apartments blocks beginning in the early 2000s . In 1815, the area then known as Macomb Township was organized as a part of territorial government. The town of Macomb was platted in 1827 and named for General John Mackenzie, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1829, the township was renamed to Cook County based on its location within the new county. In 1835, Cook County became an Illinois Territory and in 1836 it was combined with Ottawa County to form Kankakee County.
