Macomb is the third-largest city in Cook County and one of the five cities in Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Macomb were French Catholic missionaries, who established Jesuit missions near present-day Carbondale in 1795. In 1801, Ulysses S. Grant served as high commissioner for the Northwest Territory and discovered land that would become Macomb Township on June 6, 1811. The town site was surveyed by Captain John Cranch on October 12, 1821 and he named it after his home state of Michigan – also located in today’s Macomb County – because he had just crossed the state line into Illinois following his campaigns against Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal policy. The village of Carbondale was platted by George Hull on November 16,1827 and became a part of Chicago when it was organized as a city on January 1, 1847. The first post office opened in Carbondale on February 15th, 1828 under the name “Hullville” but changed its name to “Macomb” four days later due to popular demand from residents thereabouts for an appellation which reflected their regional interest with entities including Belleville (now Elgin), Holland Patent (now Antioch), and Paris (now Oak Lawn). Macomb is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,524 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and one of its six municipalities. Macomb's history stretches back to 1814 when it was part of Henderson Township. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1896. The first people to live in what is now Macomb were Native American Potawatomi Indians who hunted and gathered resources near the present-day site of Macomb City. European settlers arrived in large numbers following the end of the French and Indian War in 1763. In 1814, General John Pemberton founded Fort Dearborn on the east side of Chicago after his victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Battle of Hoche Plains near modern day Lansing, Michigan. Pennsylvania trader George Stephenson donated land for a military post on which Pemberton built his fortification called Dearborn Heights. The first residents of what is now Macomb started arriving between 1815 and 1830 during an expansion period that followed timber sales from northern Indiana and Lake Michigan with new construction efforts by General Pemberton as he tried to secure control over all trade between Upper Canada (now Ontario) and central Illinois region extending from Ottawa River to Wabash Riverhead (now Fox Creek). By 1835, more than 100 families had settled in what would become known as Old Town or Downtown while smaller clusters continued to develop around other key thoroughfares such as State Street/Dearborn Avenue/Everest Road/Lake Shore Drive within walking distance including today's Broadway Armory Plaza shopping center adjacent Interstate 79 southbound exit ramp off North Central Expressway just west of I-79 exit ramp off Northwest Tollway near Ford Motor Company plants; Masonic Temple Building; First National Bank building; Presbyterian Church building; Grote Block House (later renamed Masonic Temple); Second National Bank building . . . During this time period there were also three churches operating at or near today's downtown area: First Baptist Church (founded 1800), Methodist Episcopal Church (1801), and Roman Catholic church located across from Dearborn Avenue Presbyterian church on Elmwood Avenue NW (built before 1836). nail shops, grocery stores, bars & restaurants soon opened up throughout Downtown along with several breweries which produced beer for distribution throughout Greater Chicago including White Top Brewing Company founded by Nicholas Metropoulos in 1860s & 1870s& Hudson’s Bay Brewery founded c1900s
