Macomb is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Macomb comes from "macerata" or "macella", meaning a paste made from barley flour and water. The first white occupant of what is now Macomb Township was James Hutton in 1824. At that time only 4 families lived there. In 1836, John Stephenson settled on a tract of land south of present-day Mackinac Island and named it Stephenson's Point after himself and his brother John Stephenson (1798-1866). With no outlet for the river water which he had to share with several other settlers, Stephenson declared himself an independent republic on July 26, 1836 by signing an ordinance known as the Stevenson Declaration of Independence." In 1840 David Brown bought 5 acres from James Hutton for $100; he started milling corn here soon afterwards. In 1848 Isaac Ziegler moved to this township and built a log cabin on the banks of the Huron River near present day South Branch Street and West Side Avenue. He raised wheat, oats and potatoes until about 1870 when he sold his farm to Wm J Pritchard who plowed it into fields where modern crops are grown today. About this time also Nicholas Bemis put up a log building near what is now North Branch Street which served as village hall until destroyed by fire in 1924." In 1865 John Fenton came overland from Indiana and platted what became Macomb Township on May 10th with 640 acres extending back along State Road 9 west to Griggs Road northward." He erected two logs buildings here: one called Ewing House which still stands today next door to Parkview Cemetery; and another more recent building known as Fenton's Ford which stood east side between Old State Road 9 & Elmwood Avenue just south of Union Depot Rd., across fromPresent day Ford’s Garage/ Dealership." The main business activity during these early years seems to have been farming with some trade being conducted such as blacksmithing etcetera but this changed around 1870 when Fenton organized a store/ mercantile establishment herewith" .Fenton continued to operate this business until 1893 when it burned down due to an electrical short Circuit ." During these years there were also several schools established including one operated by Mrs Woods (1868-1914) whose pupils included future President Abraham Lincoln . Many residents of Macomb were employed locally in various positions including teachers, mechanics etcetera through out these years although many left during World War I ." After World War I most resident returned home while smaller numbers worked in nearby towns such as Hollandale or Batavia ." presently much evidence remain dating back to early 1800's when macomb was founded
